Carb Overhaul Parts
« on: November 21, 2023, 12:37:29 PM »
Going to do a carb overhaul on my '82 LS.
No idea if it's ever been done before. I'm the  third owner .
Went to the Bing Agency site complete overhaul kit $270 USD .I thought that was excessive .
Just got off the Euro Moto electric site, priced out the parts individually and the price came out to $135USD .
Quite a difference .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Thanks for the tip, carb overhaul is on the list of things I need to do soon to my 82 LS as well.  What exactly did you order from Euro Moto Electric?  Gasket set, Float, float needle and seat, anything else?  Any reason to consider the alcohol resistant floats these days?

The needle jets and diaphragms also .
I installed alcohol resistant floats on my ‘81 R65 and I personally would not purchase another kit , for the other R65’s due to the cost .
I paid $50 USD for the kit probably 20 years ago and I’ve had the floats hang up and overflow numerous times since .
I try and run the carbs dry if I know the bike won’t be used for a few weeks, I’ve got a manual for Bing carbs, it gives the parts as the carb left the factory .
The identification number for the carbs, is on a vertical flange at the front of the carb, it should be something like 64/32/325 for a left carb and 64/32/326 for a right carb .
If you need jets or needles post the numbers of the carbs .

You must have installed the 2 independent float kit. Bing also sales standard floats in alcohol resistant, but you have to ask for them. Had them for around 20 years too.

Thanks Don I’ve had questions about that, but all I’ll ever seen, was the independent floats .
I tried to order floats that were the black plastic floats that looked like the standard foam float type, but they were not available .

Those are the exact numbers on my carbs Left is 64/32/325 and Right is 64/32/326.  What would be the correct needles and jets?

The needle jet is 2.66, the needle is 241, idle jet 40 .
Main jet is 145, clip position for the needle is 3 .
Before removing the needle from the slide, measure how much needle protrudes below the slide .
My ‘81 R65 had two different positions, came this way from the factory, no one else had touched the carbs since I had it .
I changed the main jet from 145 to 137, thought it may increase fuel mileage, had no effect .
I was surprised how worn the needle jet was compared to a new one .
I did this work when the bike had 78,000 miles, 128,000 km and I didn’t see any noticeable performance difference or fuel consumption change .
I did this when the fuel supply changed to 10% ethanol, lost 5-6 mpg with that, used to get 230 miles to reserve now 190 is the best I can get, also this was when speed limit here in Arizona went from 55 mph to 75 mph on the interstate highways, this didn’t help fuel mileage as well .
