Loctite or not ?
« on: April 01, 2022, 12:01:47 PM »
Hello Guys,
I'm rebuilding entirely my R65 (04/1982) engine.
I was forced to remove the studs on the front face (timing chain chest), the studs holding the cylinders, and the stud on the clutch.
I would like to know if I should use Loctite when reassembling and if yes which one ?
Because upon cleaning them, I've found that there where some sort of hard "thing" in the thread...
And while we are at it, I would like to know how much the studs holding the jugs must protrude from the block ?
Thanks a lot in advance for your help and advice !
Have a nice and bright day !

No more than a bead on one side of about three threads on the bolt only.  In other words do not drown it.  We had a presentation by the company rep many years ago.  Put the lid on, place it in the beer fridge (so you do not lose it and preferably in a clip seal bag) and a container will last for years.

Ensure that you degrease the contact surfaces thoroughly.  Even better use their cleaner designed for that purpose.  I have some brochures in the shed somewhere.  I'll try to remember to dig them out.

Thanks.
In the mean time, I assembled the studs without anything.
The rationale was that the BMW repair manual does not state the use of any thread locker.
So we will see what happens next...
Have a nice day !
P.S. : I've had for years a pot of cyanocrylate glue in my freezer. (it was a big (250 ml) pot of a special glue ) and I finished it not so long ago...
