After our much needed rains moved through, Saturday morning dawned severe clear with sunup temps in the 60's. A perfect riding day to head north into Oklahoma for the annual burger cookout hosted by the North Dallas-based Lone Star BMW Riders Club.
I programed way points into my
Airhead GPS and headed north to Chickasaw National Recreation Area near Sulphur, Oklahoma.
Chickasaw Natl Rec Area was formerly known as Platt National Park. Platt held the distinction as being the smallest National Park in the USPS before the area was combined with an adjacent Oklahoma State Park and reclassified. All the native stone buildings and structures in the park were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps. A small herd of Bison prowl an area of the park. This snap is for Lucky Lou, our resident adopted Texican.
Well over 100 mostly BMW motorcycles and 125+ folk dropped by for a burger -many from Texas and Oklahoma but some riding in from NM, MO, KY, CA, PA and IL. Now that's a
Burger Run!
Burger central was at the Bromide Pavilion -aptly named for the natural mineral water springs located throughout the park.
Das BurgerMeister began the day with long sleeves and hair. He went home looking muck like a Mexican Hairless Chihuahua.
Oklahoma has a fine State Highway system of nice two-lane roads. My route provided ample twisty sections up and over rolling hills populated with horses, cattle, donkeys, llamas... and an Armadillo strolling along the shoulder of the road... staying safe.
The 1978 R100S performed flawlessly and returned 43 mpg while being thrashed in the twisties and hitting 85-90 mph on some short straights. A sweet ride.
