Bengt Phorqs Crensahw says you'll always remember the challenging rides. If that's the case, then our Boxerworks Rally of 2013 will never be forgotten.
0900 we depart our separate villages and plan to hook up two hours later in Bonham, Texas, for the lengthy leg to Big Cedar.
The cloudy skies at our departure points turn darker as we both head out. Sprinkles turn to light rain which soon becomes a serious downpour with lightning ground strikes and water ponding on the roads. We press on.
The MickeyD's in Bonham shelters us for two hours. That's a lot of Seniors coffee to circulate. Mike's iPhone radar shows the heavy stuff moving off to our east so we mount up and also head east. In no time at all we catch up to this monster wall of storms. We press on.
For the next 180 miles, we ride in often torrential rains. No slack. Lunch in Idabel, Oklahoma, lets us dump 1-2 gallons of water on the Braums restaurant floor but the kindly folks just mop up and say, "No problem. Y'all must be nutz anyway so don't want to aggravate the crazies."
Just north of Broken Bow, and a bit before we hit the mountains, twisties and logging trucks, the rains stops and the roads are dry. Whoopeee... Let's rock the Kiamichis.
Sunday's ride home was dry but the head and crosswinds gusting over 40mph made for another brutal (Mike's descriptor) ride.
Phorqs is right -This is one ride I'll never forget. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
