Sydney to Melbourne, Australia on an air head...
« on: April 14, 2013, 08:46:31 AM »
Hi all, recently did a road trip on my BMW cafe racer which i re-named cafe tourer to Melbourne and thought i would share my pictures. Went the long way down and did a few zig-zags and ended up on some roads that just turned to dirt in the middle of no where! All in all it was a great ride and awesome experience.

So this is how i run my bike normally. Very minimal set up. Good for quick jaunts to the cafe (yes, i am not ashamed to admit it)

Got the bug to ride long distance and started to work out a way i could take some spares, clothes, fuel etc.

The budget frame i made was no good at all so i got one welded up to last the distance and hold more weight.

Here are some pics i took off my phone and gopro....

Love the angles for the photo shots!! Did you really attach your go pro camera to a stick out the milk crate side??!

Ok, what's with the tilt tray and bike on a trailer??!! Curious to know more and I can just tell there is more to tell!!

Thank you so much for posting!!

Yep, i got out of the city and high traffic area and took a pit stop in the bush to find a heavy duty stick... It was perfect for the job and i did at least 500km with it attached. I really wanted to capture some different angles and it worked out well not only for the picture it self but was great for me to go back and look at my riding style and body position :)

Well, like every road trip there's a story! When i was mounting the bike the LHS clip on just snapped. Poor quality material and my riding buddy a good point that it was one of the only non BMW bits on the bike... If you look close on the tilt tray you can see the mirror and clip on just hanging down by the cables... The tilt driver who picked me up said to me "I know just the guy who can fix this" so he dropped me off infront of his house and he was more than happy to get me going again.... Some good people still exist!!

I just had to look that up... ATGATT! Yeah, i mean it is a must on trips and highway speeds like this.. I am guilty of going down the street with no gear, e.g after a service and on a test ride which is still risky but anything away from my safe zone its all the gear :) Thanks :)

Damn I hate you  [smiley=laugh.gif]

We did the Great Ocean Road on a minibus many years ago - we loved every minute of it. Amazing, inspiring, exciting, memorable... all come back to me know! Saw the 12 Apostles and felt very strange - wife agrees with me, it was phenomenal. I'd LOVE to do that on 2 wheels...

Thanks for the pics, really really liked them.

Nice photos, they showcase some of the Aussie bush.  I like the photos on a stick angle which reflects your creative style on the bike.

I've had the odd breakdown here but the most easily fixed was somewhere between Mildura and Melbourne on a Sunday afternoon, I had a front wheel bearing go.  I spoke with a local farmer in the middle of nowhere and he had this huge, and I mean huge lathe in his shed.  Out with the axle, a couple of bearings from the tank bag and back on the road two hours later.

A good reminder to grease the wheel bearings when they are due.   [smiley=steinigung.gif]
