Odometer Issues
« on: December 21, 2008, 01:54:47 PM »
The odometer and trip ticker on my 1987 R80 has always been a bit quirky.  Until recently, the main issue was both the odometer and trip tick would occasionally (usually after a trip tick reset to zero) just stop incrementing.

Now, however, the odometer is registering 1 mile for every 1/10 of a mile traveled almost like it is synched with the tenth of a mile marker on the trip tick.  The trip tick seems to be working normally and logging miles accurately.

Any thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The shaft that the little number wheels ride on is most likely rusted. I rebuilt mine with a bit of brass rod from the local hardware. It's a fiddly, cross eyed job to fix but if you have a knack for small fiddly bits it can be done with mediocre result. There are a number of places that perform rebuilds and they are quite good, also charge a proud fee. If your game remove the clock, open the bezel and lets have a look see.

I'd follow Rich's suggestion if you are handy with little parts and have some mechanical aptitude.   The worst that can probably happen is that you give up and end up putting it back together and shipping it to Palo Alto Speedometer or a couple other places - they can fully rebuild your speedometer to work like new, but you'll end up paying over $300
for it by the end.   They do good work, too.

Or you could, for less than half the rebuild cost, go digital as I did on my '81 R65. Lost a lot of visual clutter -IMO- and weight off the front end.
My '83 R65 still has the cow's tongue dash and fully functional instruments... for now.

Provides tachometer, speedometer, odometer, programmable shift point and max rev light, average speed for trip, total engine run time, clock (You can see the time stamp in the photo), ambient air temp, cylinder head temp, back lighting, battery power back-up... and a buncha other stuff I haven't yet messed with.

Made in the USA. $124.95. Couple local BMW riders tell me they are experiencing, "instrument envy".  ::)

The digital system is pretty darn cool but, being old fashioned, I remain commited to the original equipment (thus the stock seat and not a Corbin).

If I decide to tear into the unit, I will most likely need further assistance.

On the same song but different stanza, the odometer now about 5000 miles more than actual.  Can this be adjusted to reflect a more accurate mileage?

Thanks!

Sounds like two disks are stuck together in the odometer. If you want to dig into it it is possible. Here is a link to a good article:

Not the R65 but the innards are similar.

Once you have it open you can set the numbers anywhere you want to!!!  Want a factory fresh bike - set it to zero!    You won't be the first     ;-)
