Her first road trip
« on: November 01, 2010, 06:26:31 PM »
As many of you already know, I recently added a Triumph Trophy 900 to my fleet of two R65s. I love the SWB R65s as a solo, sporty, naked bike ride. I just feel a passenger degrades my enjoyment of these bikes... hence the Triumph with touring bags.

Sunday was a beautiful Fall day in Texas. Temps in the low 80's(F) and CAVU - Ceiling And Visibility Unlimited. Lynn had a new Bell helmet, a buffalo hide, armored, ladies MC jacket plus new gloves. BTW, What is it with chicks and gloves?

Off we went for her first "touring" ride of a h-u-g-e (for her) 100 miles. Stopped for BBQ rib dinners at Clark's Outpost in Tioga, Texas - home of Gene Autry - then headed north and n'west for a gentle cruise on a few of Texas' fine Farm-to-Market roads.

She did just great riding pillion on the new and comfy Corbin seat. She's now talking up an overnight trip somewhere. What a sweetie. She accepts my motorcycle, automotive and aviation habits with nary a fuss.

Thanks, Sweetheart. [smiley=engel017.gif]

Is the Trophy the high pipes model?  I like those.  I would prefer that my wife just get her own bike, but oh well.

It's very pleasant on the road. Very minimal vibration and truly nice at 80mph... Lynn couldn't see the speedo so mum's the word. The D & D slip-on "muffs" are rather crackling but I wear ear plugs anyway. Bengt Phorqs doesn't like to trail behind the Turnip.

Looking for a Givi 36 liter top case for more of "her stuff".

Monte,

You silver-tongued rascal!  I did an extended factory demo ride last month on a Triumph Bonny T100.  Very impressive bikes and well balanced.  It was a blast, I didn't want to return it.

My only mistake was getting on a new bike after riding 30+ year old machines.

LRB, the R65LS, and the '09 Bonneville SE FI are very similar rides for bike size and turning radius etc. The big difference for me is the FI makes the Bonnie's throttle more responsive for the amount of turn BUT it is a lot more snatchy and LRB takeoffs are smoother and starting on a hill more predictable and effective. So the clutch engagement is far out on the Bonnie and the friction zone on LRB much easier for me to find. Might be my hand size.
LRB's gas tank size wins hands down!!!
FI starts and warms up quicker than LRB so is a good choice for colder days. Just some thoughts.
FI will be a bear to fix on the road. LRB I have a chance!
1983 R65LS - LRB still my favourite!? 1988 Honda NX250, "Toodles Too" and a Suzuki DR650, "Calypso." All stored in the "Brrrmmm Closet".

OK, so I was messing around in my Photobucket albums and accidentally deleted the Turnip's photo. Here's a replacement.

Sue, Your Bonnie is a "lightweight" compared to the Trophy! After a few miles on the Triumph, I get back on the R65s and feel like a road racer; easy to flick 'er.

Several peeps over on the Triumph Rat forum complain about its low-speed, turning manners; including the need to take off smartly to avoid what they refer to as their wobbles. I dunno about that. I believe it's all about a certain level of experience and training/practice.

Bill, UPS delivered a new Givi E36 this past week. Big enough for our needs. Bengt Phorqs has a theory that if you have big capacity bags, you'll unconsciously load them to max capacity and end up with a top heavy, ill handling bike. A grain of truth in there, I think. Full of fuel, the Triumph is a bit top heavy.

Mentioned to my wife that the Trophy was now looking kinda "Hog-ish" with all the luggage. Will keep most stored and refit bags for trips. The Givi Monokey system of bags and racks makes removal and attachment a "snap".

Actually, those Union Jacks are stock OEM as are the two smaller versions up on the instrument pod. Triumph rumor mill has it that John Bloor is so proud of the "new" Hinckley Triumphs that he wants the world to know this ain't no UJM.

Perhaps you'll appreciate the Union Jack auto club badge on the rear fender extension.

Sweet, is it single disc on the front? there seems to be differences between the US and UK spec bikes but there seems to be alot more 1200,s than 900,s over here.

The Trophy has dual disc brakes up front and a strong single disc out back. Stops quite well.

I left work the other day, riding the Triumph, and reached a spot on the highway where the speed limit went from 50 mph to 60 mph. Well... thought I'd just roll on some throttle and see what the little puppy would do. Not a good idea...

I was at 80 mph registered on the speedo and climbing -in a 60 mph zone- when I looked to the right at the car I was about to pass. Had to quickly grab a hand full of brakes to whoa up as I noticed the graphics on the car said, "Denton County Sheriff".  [smiley=shocked.gif]

Fortunately, I had moved well ahead of the cages trailing me so the sudden slow down didn't result in my getting hammered from behind. Deputy Dog never knew I was there...Lucky for me.

It is a most impressive auto club badge.  But I look at that photo and all I can see is the chicken strips on the rear tire.   :o

But I'll give Monte the benefit for now since he hasn't had it out for a real open road test yet.  He did tell me on Friday night that earlier in the day he had ridden all three of his bikes in his garage.  Must have been pretty tight in that garage Monte! ;D
