a little bimble...
« on: August 04, 2010, 07:35:20 AM »
My big ride of the summer was driving my 1971 BSA Thunderbolt From Atlanta to Cape Cod and back about two weeks ago.

Here is the thread over on britbike.com

http://www.britbike.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=323565#Post323565

I did the Ride up ah la Iron Butt style.  I split the ride home into two days to see some britbike folks in Virginia.  The last day was spent on the BlueRidge Parkway.  Dodging butterflies on the BRP....

Now he's famous on Britbike.com too!

That Dick Harris who commented that he even made it on a BSA is the same guy who had an article about him for riding his '70 Bonneville all over the country a few years back.  He has two '70 Bonnevilles, both with over 100,000 miles.

If I rode my Triumph over a thousand miles in 24 hours my butt would detach itself from my body and kill me.  If I didn't fall asleep and wreck, that is.

That's some impressive riding, Semper G.

Really impressive, Bill.  I really enjoyed the thread, but mostly your accounts.  Naturally I followed it along on Google Maps.  I can't believe the distances you cover on non-interstate highways.  Of course, the BRP is non-stop, as far as I remember?  And with that fuel cell, you have it made!

This is the first I have heard of the self-inflating seat cushion.  And I see you have some hefty weights on the ends of your cushy hand grips!
I've been thinking of getting some of those grips for my CB200.  (Are these, them?)

Congratulations, again!

Yes.  They are period correct and not that cushy though.  The HVMP bar end weights are a necessity on the britbike.  Thanks guys for the compliments.  All that experience riding the R65 around the country positively transfered to riding the BSA long distances.  It was fun ridng and disproving Britbike myths.

As Dean at Boxworks says about longdistance riding, the key is "don't stop".  Anything that keeps you moving -- fuel, seat, bar end weights, throttle lock, big alternator -- is good.

Mr. Bill Semper Gumby!  What a ride.  That sounds like you though.   8-)    Everyone!!  I want you to meet our resident Iron Butt rider!   ;D

Great write-up.  And a very nice picture of you on that bike.

I just got a Givi windshield for my bike at Redmond.  Is it the wind buffeting around the helmet you don't like?  If that's it, I know what you mean.  I don't like that either.  But, I'm thinking maybe one of those additions to the shield like Sue has on her Triumph might work out.  I'm going to look into it.

Thanks for that ride report!

Hi Melena,

I tilted the top of the windshield towards me as much as possible and shortened the distance from the top of the Givi to my helmet as much as possible .  That greatly reduced the wind buffet.  If at first you don't succeed.... 8-)
