Spring Wildflower Ride Day 1
« on: April 01, 2009, 12:47:30 PM »
This past weekend saw Feyonce' (aka Theresa, aka TMc) take our annual Spring Wildflower Ride.  She on her R1100R and me on my Moto Guzzi California Special Sport departed Bedford Texas Friday morning under drizzly skies and 25-30 mph winds out of the northwest.  The hope of finding wildflowers in this continuing drought did not bode well, but still it was great to get out on the bikes.

The plan was to spend Friday and Saturday on the west side of I-35 and ride the Texas Hill Country.  Nothing eventful happened but the roads were empty and we made good time on our way down the back roads through Glen Rose, Iredell (which normally has great bluebonnets) and on into Lampassas where we stopped for lunch.  Well actually a wild turkey almost got me but I'm kind of a turkey magnet when in the Hill Country, having dodged quite a few in the past.  Found a great little eatery on the town square, Eve's Cafe, with some tasty and affordable schnitzel.  Tanked up and then headed out west of town on Texas FM 580 & 501.

If you ever find yourself in central Texas you really must ride FM 580.  Lots of swoopy curves, hills and valleys and very pretty scenery.  Best of all, it's usually very lightly travelled.  On past Bend where TMc was almost devoured by a huge limb from a pecan tree that had fallen on the road (she's always having pecan limbs fall on her at my house, bless her heart), but she emerged unscathed.  Bend is right on the Colorado River where it is still very natural and there is a nice state park a couple of miles away, Colorado Bend SP.  Didn't stop at the park but headed south on Tx 16 past Baby Head Cemetary, and on down to Llano, turned left on TX 71 for the run into Austin where we stayed over with her son who grilled up some bodacious sirloins that evening.  That boy does know his way around charcoal.
