Fitting an RS fairing
« on: April 25, 2008, 04:19:52 PM »
After failing to find a suitable plain R100, I've decided to fit my RS fairng kit onto my R65. (and save money towards another sportier machine) The R65 will, I think be a perfectly adequate motorway cruiser (now we're all monitored by speed cameras) with the fairing fitted and I'm confident performance won't be much affected.
I would really welcome any tips about suspension choices. I understand some members using RT fairings have fitted progressive fork springs with good results . I'm not clear exactly which ones though? Has anyone found a steering damper necessary?  Any particular problems you guys have come across ? Thanks

RS fairing is newly refurbished. Here's a preliminary fitting.
Took R65 off the road today and hope to get most of the fitting work completed during next week  ;D ;D . There seems a LOT to be done. In addition to actually getting the fairing fitted on, new brake hoses, change bars to allow continued use of R65 master cylinder, cables and wiring mods, and many more yet to be discovered no doubt. First major work to get a spacer for the headstock cradle that will move the whole fairing 1.5cm forward. As you can see the faring lowers aren't well lined up with the cylinders. Bars and forks need the spacer to allow free movement. Most annoyingly BMW have tapped the headstock to accept 8 x 1.12 mm bolt threads, talk about unobtanium. I have a pair of used ones on the way but worry they may not be long enough for the spacer.
So  I'm not surprised no one has replied to my first post on this thread  ;D ;D
It would still be fantastic though, to hear from someone who has fitted an RS fairing themselves.

Nice looking conversion,   ;D I don't know why more people don't do it!  Although this is a one-off hand laid copy of an RS fairing it is identical in size and uses the BMW mounting hardware.  I put progressive springs in the forks and have Konis on the back and the bike handles well with no damper needed.

There are/were a couple of folks here that have ex-cop R65s with the RT fairing.

why no just get a hammer and whopp your self up side the head, If you want a RS they are not hard to find, i guess people up north need things to do in the winter.

Or it's the cool/different factor of having something "different"...

I beleive mine was factory fitted, or dealer fitted from new.

Such a great fairing to cut through the British elements. Its hard to go back to a naked after an RS fairing.

Ive also got some prog springs to replace the tired (87) originals, but aint put em in yet.

Makes me looking very much forward to having my own RS-fairing - very nice machine!

Work is in progress: The fairing is at the painter's being painted black with a thin white stripe and the wh8la2 is in the shed awaiting a total strip down which begins today!

Took the wh8la2 to work wednesday and thursday, driving before sunup in moist weather and heavy traffic in the opposite lane is not my favorite discipline, I prefer to be able to see through the helmet screen, so most of the way (20 miles) was done with the screen up only resulting in my glasses getting wet and dirty. Nevertheless it is more fun than driving a cage.
