You get to some good shows, Dirk.  That R65 racer is crazy looking.  Good pictures, too, thanks for sharing.  It might have been easier if you started a new thread, though, as this one took a long time to load all the previous pictures too,

Either way thanks for posting,

Ah, I see Dirk's been ridin' and photographizin' again!
How'd I miss these new pics for so long?  :-?
Anyway, great photos as always, Dirk, you do a fine job as R65.org's European Correspondent.

What's that suicide-shift looking doohickey on the right in several of the r51/3 pics: kickstarter with a round ball at the end? Or, is it actually a right-side hand shift? Did BMW ever have right-side shifting like the British bikes "back in the day"?

Thanks again, Dirk, and please keep them coming as often as possible, okay?

Helle Steve, hello John!

yes, Steve, you are right. The funny little stick and the right side of the gear box is not a kickstarter but a hand-shifting stick. I´ve got that on my K-750, too. And it is very helpful. When I stop at a traffic light after driving in the third or fourth gear I wouldn´t find the neutral position by foot before the lights have turned to green, to red and back to green! ::) :o
So I push the hand shift back to the first gear und pull him back one step . That works very well.

Cu

Dirk

Very cool, Dirk, thanks for the info!

We had a fairly large Ural rally here in Virginia a few months ago, probably 20-25 rigs, a few Dneprs, a couple of BMW sidecar setups, and 1 elderly 60's-something KMZ rig. Honestly, that KMZ was the sweetest running, easiest starting bike in the whole bunch, and it wasn't a trailer-queen showbike either!

The owner, a young guy in his mid 30s, had ridden 'er down from New Jersey, appx. 500 miles, and was on an extended summer tour of the East Coast. That KMZ started 1st kick every time and settled right into a steady, smooth idle, and he always motored away smoothly while some of the other guys were constantly fiddling with their "other brands".
It was pretty impressive!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
