The Devils Highway
« on: May 06, 2007, 05:54:36 PM »
Riders,
I'm thinking I'd like to take a multi day ride on Arizona's Rt 191, formerly known as Rt666 or The Devils Highway. I've been collecting info on a nice loop that runs through New Mexico. Time frame is sometime in August. Looking for personal experiences or even an R65 or two to share the ride. Some basic info below from a tour group but I won't be traveling on this particular organized ride.

Rich, I drove US 191 last September, One, I wouldn't want to be on that road in anything other than severe clear conditions, and August is prime 'monsoon season'.  Two ,if you are riding with someone that's trying to impress you with their riding abilities, there will be trouble, this road has no place for inflated egos. This piece of pavement demands respect, cell phones don't work in most of the ride, so if you get yourself into trouble, help can be along time in getting there. If nobody sees you go off the road, and you don't start a fire, it could be months before you would be found. Hate to sound so negative, but this is a no nonsense road. I would highly recommend doing the drive in a cage to get the general feel of the road, the 110 miles or so is about a 3 hour drive from Springerville to Clifton, and at the southern end the posted speed limit is 10 MPH, and that at times is too fast!

Riding all year long since 1993 .
I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Monsoon season. I forgot. Ive seen some video of the road and your right. No shoulder, for that matter, no nothing off the edge of the pavement. I hear ya 'bout respect for the road. I was plannin' on a solo trip as most of the other riders I know suffer from "speedism"*. I just want to mosey.
