Tire Recommendations for a 1982 R65LS
« on: October 24, 2026, 06:20:49 PM »
Hello everyone,

I'm writing from Japan, where information about the R65LS is quite difficult to find.

I own a 1982 BMW R65LS and would really appreciate hearing about your experiences with tires.

The original tire sizes are:

Front: 3.25-18
Rear: 4.00-18

These days, it's difficult to find matching front and rear tires in the original sizes.

What brands and tire size combinations are you using on your R65LS?

I'm currently considering:

Front: 100/90-18
Rear: 4.00-18

The two tires I'm particularly interested in are:

* Michelin Road Classic
* Metzeler Roadtec 01

I'd also like to know whether anyone has successfully used tubeless tires without tubes on the original Composite wheels.

I understand that tire handling is a matter of personal preference, but I'd love to hear your impressions of the tires you've used.

Of course, any other tire recommendations are very welcome!

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Best regards,
R65LS_Japan

I mounted Shinko 712s to my R65LS, 100/90 front, 110/90 rear. I'm happy with them, although I put them on first thing when getting the bike, so I have nothing to compare them to. The handling seems great.

I am running these tubeless. I don't loose any pressure over weeks of riding. These rims have the bead lock bump. I actually had a very hard time getting the front tire to seat over that bump. Had to take it to a nearby shop, where they struggled a bit as well.
