insurance issue
« on: October 04, 2014, 06:44:59 PM »
I recently put my bike back on the road after a 1 1/2 yr storage. I insure my vehicles with Esurance so I thought I would go with them to insure the bike too.

Their price was competitive so I went with them to satisfy the States requirements. A couple of days later they emailed me saying they needed a picture of the bike so I took a couple(attached) and sent it to them via email. all was well for awhile...................

Then they emailed me back a week later stating that they needed a picture of all 4 sides of the bike(was never stated in 1st email) or my policy would cancel on such and such a date. Keep in mind that this is a  liability policy ONLY, no coverage for the bike,

I gritted my teeth and sent them a 4th pic(that they didn't need) and they responded that they couldn't open it and if they didn't get it by such and such a date I would be canceled.

I responded in a few words telling them that I was thru sending pictures that they didn't need in the first place and if the 3 they have would not be enough go ahead a cancel the policy.

I have had State required liability since they started demanding it and never has a vendor requested pictures of the bike. Is there a point I'm missing or am I dealing with idiots?

The only time I was required to send pictures of a vehicle for opening a new insurance policy, was to get collector insurance .

That's what I'm thinking.... if I had wanted collision coverage I understand the pictures, but for liability? and 4 pics no less

When I was shopping around Progressive wanted me to take the bike to one of their offices for some sort of inspection.  Perhaps they are wary of insuring a motorcycle only to find out it's been wildly customized and made more accident prone...  think big chopper with a 4" front drum brake, or even no front brakes!

Esurance should have asked you for those photos before they issued the policy.  If they took your money, they shouldn't start threatening to take away the policy.

Geico didn't require any sort of inspection and their prices were good, so I went with them.  Now that RI law allows antique vehicles to drive anytime as long as they have a safety inspection, I might go with a classic car/motorcycle specialty insurance and an antique license plate.  Cheap and cool  8-)

I've never had Progressive ask for pics and we have 4 bikes insured with 'em...  The only time I ever had to send pics of anything was when I wanted Comp on an old MG I had restored...

I went ahead and played their game and sent them 3 pics, the two that I posted and one shot from the front. They responded back that a pic of the left side was required also or they would cancel the policy. It's the requirement of ALL 4 SIDES that confounds me

In their defense they are very apologetic  and are sorry for my inconvenience yada yada and I have been questioning their polices, but have remained civil. Their last email gave me a number inside their company to talk to............

I'll make that call and get back with you on  their position and why. if work permits. I flew to Alabama today to start a job and don't know yet how busy I'll be for the next week

I was able to make the call today........ sorry to report that the folks at Esurance are idiots.

I got to a licensed agent  and she said that they required the photos. I aked to be transferred to "they" and she said that was the underwriting dept and "they" don't take calls. she did say that she would contact them for me if I would hold. I said sure.

When she returned she said that "they" needed to know if there was damage on the other side of the bike. I said it didn't matter as the policy is just liability. "Sorry that's their requirement", she replied.

I was stone walled at that point and was never going to get to talk to "they" to have them explain the reasoning. End of conversation.
