Interesting that you say the "snowflake" wheels should be tubed ? when i did my rebuild the tyres i replaced were tubeless and the ones i fitted are, that said i am an occasionall rider and always check the pressures before i set off usually losing 1 to 2 psi a week the longest run i have done was just over 200 miles with no significant loss when i checked them the following day.
As for the sudden loss of pressure does seem strange that you didn't not notice anything before you arrived.

... I could see the bit of old tire bead still stuck to the inside of the rim right where the new tire bead had to seat. About an inch long and not very thick but enough to stop a good seal.

I run tubless on my 1981 R65 for now near 4K miles without any problems. When mounting the new Bridgestone Spitfires, I carefully inspected and removed any aluminum "spurs" left from ham fisted tire iron POs. When the rims were as smooth as a baby's butt, the tires were mounted, balanced and away we go!
