Lumpy Tickover

My Trusty Honda Accord 2.0 exec as suddenly developed a lumpy tick over im wondering if a set of plugs may cure it. I have had this car from new (10years) and it now has 70k on it,and has never let me down, i had an annual service in June(lost the bill so dont know if plugs were done) and dont really want to take it back in unless i have too so your thoughts on this before i start splashing the cash.

ps the only expensive repair was replacing the oxygen sensor a while back other than that its just been routine maintenance.

Any sign of an engine warning light ?

It would be nice and simple if it is just the plugs but with modern cars (10 years old is modern compared to mine) it can often have something to do with the CPU or maybe a dodgy ignition coil which also seems to be a common fault these days. Even if there is no engine warning light the CPU will likely have stored error codes. Know anyone with a code reader ?

Around here most of the auto parts stores will let you borrow a code reader for free.

My daily driver cage is a 1986 VW Mk1 Cabriolet. Fuel injected, electronic ignition, 1800cc.

Last time mine acted up with poor idle and a bit of doggy performance, I changed out plug wires, plugs, dizzy cap and rotor. All good now.

And for the bonus round, the cabby turned 25 years old on 01 Jan 2011. So? No more emissions testing required. The annual 'safety' inspection went from $40.00 to $14.50. That's almost as good as scoring Vintage Motorcycle plates for both R65s!

Honda cars rock. Change the oil n' filter... drive em forever.

My '04 Saturn Vue has a Honda engine/tranny in it.  I'm at 165k and all I've ever done is follow the maintenance schedule and change oil every 3k.  I think that Monte is on to something.  Change the plugs/wires/cap etc and see how it goes.  Probably needs to be done anyhow.

Hondas have a reputation for creating bulletproof machines here. Underbone motorcycles made in china would have needed a valve
replacement where a Honda would still keep on going.

My XR200 can attest to that. The thing has fallen over whoops, dirt ramps, berms and hill sides. The plastics may be beaten up badly but it still runs like brand new.

Thanks for the input, there are no warning lights on and other than tickover its as sweet as a nut so i will switch the plugs and leads next weekend and see how it goes.....gotta luv the cruise control great for towing could do with one on the bike.

I suspect that the problem is more 'fuel/air' related than 'electrical'.  I would check for dirty injectors or a bad tank of fuel. I think your engine has an idle air control valve (IAC).  If it is dirty/sticky it would cause idle problems.

Ahh great memories went to see them in Roundhay park Leeds an open air gig on my brothers Kwaka 1000  had a blast great concert.

Since the warranty period it has only been routinely serviced when the MOT was due, the only non service item was when the "Lan" sensor needed changing so i think the leads are original but im changing them and the plugs next weekend.
