Didn't win on eBay
« on: August 22, 2008, 05:31:24 PM »
OK, so I lost this one. The breaker cat in Austin, Texas, aka LamontSanford (I love that), had both handlebar switch assemblies off an '81 R65. As I mentioned, I didn't "win" them but hopefully someone among us did. What amused me though, and is the curse of these auctions, the left-side assembly went for more money than the price of a new one from Chicago BMW. I know this because I called 'em in the Windy City!

So what? Well, this afternoon I took a short ride on the R65 outta town the Cowboy Way. Just enjoying the cooler, relatively speaking, 95 degree temps. Stopped for a wifely errand and noticed my oil pressure lamp was on even with the engine shut down. Toggled a couple switch thingys and it finally went off after I punched the starter button! This cannot be a good thing.

Got home and popped open the headlight shell and noticed the low and high beam power wires were in contact and had, for some reason, melted part of the plugs insulation. DVOM showed OK on circuit integrity but the ignition switch -not standard BMW- no longer functioned. Double harump.

Long story short... The high / low beam switch on the left side switch assembly -the one I lost on eBay- was in a sorta middle position and was not playing nice with the power to the headlight. Toggled the dip switch to a correct position and the problem went away. Fixed insulation issue.

Glad I called Chicago!

Your Oil Pressure light should be lit when the engine is NOT running and the key is in the RUN position.

It should go out quickly after starting the engine.

If your oil light should come on while the engine is running, SHUT IT OFF QUICKLY!

Not to change the subject from your oil light problem, but "Lamont" is actually Larry Chabira, a fine fellow who sells lots of BMW and Guzzi parts on a regular basis.
He's not much of a BSer, but if you know what you're looking for, you might want to email him directly and save him some Ebay fees, at lamontsanford<at>sbcglobal<dot>net: that worked the last time I tried it.

On a semi-related note, his nephew recently sent me a centerstand for the Guzzi for the cost of s&h only, just because I needed one and he had it. Said he learned everything he knows about mo'sickes from Uncle Larry  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Thought I 'splained everything pretty clearly, but to reiterate ... engine off, ignition and secondary ignition shut off switch both in off positions. Fault was in headlight dip switch and possible heat-related wire in headlight shell. Fixed light toggle plus wire and all back to normal ops.

Well versed in the op idiot light theory. Note that the op light was lit up while the bike was totally secured. That's why the aircraft I pilot do not have op idiot lights  ;D

His "yard business" is a few miles from my eldest son's home in Austin, Texas. I'll be there on the 20th of September for my granddaughter's birthday. A side trip is planned for a visit to Sandford & Nephew.

Half a mo'... We may be talking about two different Beemer breakers. I'm hitting Airhead Salvage in Austin and it's run by Mike Hamende. Where are Lamont, aka Larry Habira, and his nephew located?
Thanks,  Monte
