Hello everyone! I'm new.
« on: July 06, 2012, 02:57:35 PM »
Hello. I am Matthew and I joined the forum a few weeks ago. Already i am very grateful for all the resources available form this forum. My dad has an 84 R65 and he is letting me ride it around. It has a few problems though. Rusty gas tank, fuel line issues, and the carbs need cleaning. It has sat in storage for 15-20 years. Only 9,000+ miles!!!! If anyone has any advice I would love to hear it, otherwise I'll be pouring over the forum for advice already posted. Thanks again everyone!

Eh, Matthew. Glad to have you and Dad's R65 join us.

There is a pdf copy of the R65 Owners Manual in the Tech FAQS section of the forum. Page two: R65 Manual-1981/1984

Download and start your service with a change of ALL fluids.

Remove the fuel tank and, at a minimum, slosh out the debris inside, clean the petcock and replace all the fuel lines.

Drop the float bowls. Clean the out and don't overlook the small, brass jet in the bottom of the enrichener (choke) fuel reservoir. Be sure it is clear. Pass a single, thin, copper wire thru the jet to confirm.

For your own safety, please consider new tires. 15-20 year-old rubber is dangerous to you and others.

Be sure you are clear on Bing carb overhaul techniques before tearing into the two carbs.

Bookmark Snowbum's website and refer to it often. That'll save you grief and money.

That's a start. Go get busy. Post photos. Scale 'em to fit.

Short of going ahead and selling the bike to me, do like Monte says, get the owners manual and start with fluids.  These older bikes don't like synthetics very well, but fresh petrochemicals and fresh rubber are a very good start.  There are Haynes manuals and Clymers.  They are a little different but between the two you can do all your service work.  If you aren't sure of something, do a search on this forum.  It's been covered but we'll be glad to cover it again.

Mr. Tuvman is currently our resident poet laureate.  He had the story of his R65 rebuild in not one, but two, of the BMW Owners News recently so he does have experience in rejuvenating these little cows.  Welcome to the farm and good wrenching!
