Memorial Day Holiday Weekend
« on: May 28, 2010, 08:11:57 AM »
For the US members, now that the three day holiday weekend is upon us, have any plans for this weekend ?

I wonder how many people realize that this holiday is for the citizens of the US and it's territories, that gave their lives in defense of our country, instead of the unofficial start of summer ?

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Thanks for the reminder Bob. My appreciation and thanks to all those who gave their time and their lives for our freedom. Part of my time will be enjoying what those have provided for me and my country - the other time will be spent in the shop and on the road enjoying the same. Take a moment and call those that are still with us to thank them.  It's much more than just a day off and another "Holiday".

Memorial weekend I often end up playing in several parades and memorial service ceremonies at cemeteries.   I've had family members in the service for WWI, WWII, the Korean war and Vietnam.  We should never forget to honor those who  offered their lives in service.

In spite of all the burials and ceremonies I've been to, including spending time at the Arlington national cemetery and watching the ceremonies there - I have never been so moved as I was when I visited Pearl Harbor and the Arizona memorial.

After two graduations the last two weekends - son from college and daughter from high school- Laura and I are looking forward to a long weekend of no traveling or socializing.

I am doing my fifth favorite leisure time activity, working on the R65.  I presently have Speedometer #2 pulled apart in an attempt to get the speed reading functioning again.  Also looking forward to a short warm-up ride to do some final fine tuning of the carbs using my NOS Colortune plug that arrived yesterday!  Semper Gumby talked me into it with his consistent praise of the Colortune.  I decided that my totally inexperienced ear was never going to set the mixture right, so I thought I'd opt for a visual method.
And if the USPS comes through today and my tube of Honda 60 arrives, I'll finally be lubing my splines and will be able to ride some distance without worrying that I'm grinding my splines into glitter.
Hope you all have a safe and happy weekend!

Just returned home from a benefit ride for a local family. Their 13 year old son was playing baseball and had a collision with the opposing player at first base. He suffered internal bleeding and died a day later. He was one of my son's playmates since 1st grade. It just shows how fragile life really is and just how precious it is. The entire two wheeled community turned out and raised in excess of $10k to help the family offset their expenses. It is not about the bikes but I was the only BMW, only airhead and definitely only r65 in attendance and it felt good to give  little something back to the community. Be safe and enjoy your holiday.
Keep your bike in good repair: motorcycle boots are not comfortable for walking.

A little history...

Veterans Day is commemorated in the United States on 11 November. However, the function of the observance is more closely matched by Memorial Day in May. In the United States, and some other allied nations, 11 November was formerly known as Armistice Day. In the United States it was given its new name after the end of World War II.

In our home, we salute the men and women, past and present, of our American Armed Forces.
