I'm a BMW MOA member and recently purchased a non running '82 R65LS Henna Red w/Luftmeister. Pretty bike but she needs help!.

Currently own BMW F650GS, K75S, Honda SL125.

I've been posting some comments on the MOA website and Boxermaf suggested I join the site.

Tranny was locked up and when I drained gear oil it poured out of the fill cap on top - nothing came out from under so I realized frozen water must have been in there (live in the tundra). My son suggested we put a heat lamp beneath he as the last two days have been above zero.
The water drained out and hanging from the drain plug, on the bottom was a broken piece of what I think is the circlip (saw some images other MOA members posted).  Will soon be pulling the transmission and will evaluate doing it ourselves or sending it out. Motor looks okay and now when I pull clutch in the rear wheel spins (it did not when the frozen water was in it). Shifter moves but does not engage any gears.
Engine I believe is okay but might be slightly locked up from sitting so long.
My 15 year old is all over her - he wants us to fix her up and get her running.
In this case, patience will be a virtue!

Welcome Ken, sounds like you must be north of the mountains in AK but I guess MN is about as bad, sometimes.

I am in the middle of rebuilding an '82 LS and just finished rebuilding the transmission in it.  It's not that bad if you have a decent amount of mechanical ability and can make/scrounge a few tools.

We're in some amount of turmoil, here, with the new host move and logins are not working right for a lot of people so don't be surprised if things change again in a few days.  I'm going to try to save everything since Monday, but there's always the chance...

Thanks - where did you buy your parts for the tranny?  I hear cracking the case is somewhat challenging. What specialized tools did you have to make or get?

Ken, I ordered everything from Moto-Bins (www.motobins.com), although they are in England and the shipping is a few bux they were still cheaper in the long run.  The bearings are common and were available locally, but Moto-Bins still had the best price.

Getting the back cover off wasn't too bad.  I was able to put to use the Harbor Freight heat gun I bought and along with some tapping and wiggling, it came right off.  Tools?  The sky's the limit on that one!  ;)  I made a bearing shimming plate, a puller for the output flange, and a couple specially sized "seal installers".  You will also need the aforementioned heat gun and a bearing puller.  A 0-1" micrometer and a 0-1" depth mic are nice but I suppose a digital or dial caliper would suffice.

If you do a search over the past month you should find some posts with pix I put up.

Ken, here's the link to the tranny overhaul thread.  If you have any further questions on what to do/not do start a new thread in the Tech Section...

Welcome Ken - and it sounds as if you may be right - take the time to fix her up - patience for a 15 year old is something they don't necessarily understand.... ;)
