New here.

I found this site the other day and the information/links have been awesome!  Figured I'd better quit lurking and make it official so my account doesn't get deleted.  My dad and uncle are airhead geeks and when I mentioned I was interested in getting a bike...well they had a 1980 R65.  The bike was rescued from a parking lot a couple years ago for $600.  They originally thought they were buying a parts bike.

About me.  I am a new rider.  Passed the MSF BRC course with a perfect score a month ago and am currently reading Proficient Motorcyling for the second time.

Anyways, here's a pic...it's a rat-bike through and through, which gives it a lot of character I think.  The picture seems to hide a lot of the character though.  Either way, I like this bike quite a bit.

Well well,
Not a bad showing at all. If it's in the condition as pictured it looks like your off and running! Dual disc up front, nice set of hard bags and your seat doesn't even seem to be showing any foam! I'd ride it in public. Pull up a chair and make yourself at home!

If that's a rat bike well..............hmmmmm. Looks fine to me and welcome to you and your family of good BMW gurus! Sounds like you will make a really competent rider as well who realizes that there is much to learn and goes about learning it!

I vote "No" for rat bike.

You are making my bike look bad!
(I gave you the link to the original photo, so you can see the dirt close-up!  :P )

Thanks for the welcome!

Alright...maybe it's not as ratty as I think...just "well worn" in appearance from up close. :)

Welcome to our little forum, and we all look forward to hearing about your blossoming love affair with your beloved Beemer!  [smiley=happy.gif]

Hey thats quite a tidy looking R65, and I sure wouldn't call it a rat bike. Sure its a little tatty, but R65 is a little gem to work on, and I'm sure a bit of TLC would/could soon tart her up.

Rat Bike ?!?!?  At's not a rat bike, mate...
Now this, is a Rat Bike:

or better still:
http://www.ratbike.org/docs/show98_70.php

One of the trademarks of a rat bike is a rattle-can flat black paint job - please don't
do that to this lovely looking little air-head with glossy white paint !

Correction...the bike was purchased for $400.

So how much more bondo, rattle-can white, duct tape, hoseclamps, lay-downs, and beating the triple clamp off with a ball peen hammer will it take before I can call it a ratter?  The previous owner didn't even bother clean the tank, nor did he mask off the roundels all the way before attacking it with the rattlecan.  Dude was a hack.

I've seen pictures of that flat black R65 before.  And I am not going to lie...my bike is probably going to get a coat of flat black this winter.  The only thing is, there won't be any dirt in the paint when I spray it.

But most importantly, the bike runs and rides great.   :)

Welcome.  Glad to have you aboard.  Sorry it took me so long to post here.  The picture of your bike looks great.  Of course, there are probably things we can't see and only you know.  But your bike looks great.  And if it runs great, that's what counts.

You want to see rat bikes?  Look at these!   ;D

This bike belongs to a friend of mine, it started out as a R100RT.
