Hello From The Gold coast, Australia
« on: April 08, 2007, 05:19:10 PM »
Just to Introduce myself.
I'm Ivan, 56 Years old and just got the wife's OK to get back to Motorcycling after a break of 30 odd years.
Just bought an old 1983 r65 Beemer and am gettting to grips with it. The bike is pretty Ok, done 45000 Kms and is in pretty good nick.
Plan to restore it to its former glory and all that soon.

I know I wil have a lot of questions(eg can I fit an R75 or R80 Tank without any modifications ?) so I hope I will be able to get some answers and meet a few folks here

Thanks n Cheers
Iva

Welcome! and feel free to start a thread with your fuel tank question in the tech section, for R65s...

Did we email recently?

I'd say your bike looks to be in very fine nick, myself! ;)

Nice looking R65 ! Welcome aboard, and post often. Not being overly familiar with Oz, where is the Gold Coast located ?

Riding all year long since 1993 .
I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Gold Coast is the North East side popularly known as Surfers Paradise in Queensland state. Bit like riding in Florida though, can be hot and humid. But definitely no shortage of sunshine. :)

Hi guys
Thanks for the warm welcome. This is also the first time I've joined a forum. so I hope I'm following the right protocol for posting. Pls bear with me.
The gold coast (state of Queensland) is on the East coast of Australia about a thousand Kms nrth of Sydney. 100 K's south of Brisbane, the main n largest city in Queensland. The weather is perfect for motorcycling year-round. I've been out of motorcycling for the last 30 odd years (managed to keep my licence valid though) And thought I should get back to it.

Nice to find this forum n a Beemer community.
I hope to be a regular here.

Thats all for now

Yeah, good lookin' bike, Ivan!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I think Britta was the same color when I bought her, but since I had previously owned another R65 of the same color, opted to paint her "metallic emerald" instead.

It's great to have people from "down under" on this forum!  Makes me wonder if we have ever had any "kiwis" as members of this forum.  Does anyone know?  :-?

If any have bothered looking at the "Interesting Stats" post they will see Oz in third place, right behing "Unknown IP", so I guess that makes them second place.  ;) Most of the other wierd places in the list are probably where a lot of our spammer buddies come from...  >:(

There are a lot of airhead bmw's in AUS, and I see more "younger" people on them now - people like me who always thought they were ugly old man touring bikes, but now we like "real motorcycles" as opposed to the fibreglass specials that were on offer.

I'm spreading the word to any r65 owners I see......

I bought my first BMW, a '72 R60/5, in 1975 just because it was a deal too good to pass up.  It had 1200 miles on it and I gave $1000 for it, the guys wife said it never got ridden because her husband was scared of it!!!  I figured I'd ride it, and take the ribbings while I was rebuilding my chopped Honda.  After riding it for a few thousand miles I decided that I kind of liked it, finished and sold the Honda, and never looked back...

I am from India Originally and all my biking experiences were entirely on two strokes. India in the 70's just had 3 makes of motorcycles. Jawas (czheckoslovakian) and a polish bike called just WFM (some info here  http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/kevins_pages/bantam_history.html). It had the original old Beemer style Earles front suspension. Both bikes were two stokes. They came in 3 sizes. The Jawas were in tiny 50cc and 250cc. The  WFM (locally branded "Rajdoot) bike was a 175cc model. The third make was and is still being made - the Royal enfield Bullet. It ws originally only available as a 350cc engine, but now is also available as a 500cc and even has electric start.  The only other bikes were scooters made by Lambreta (manufactured under Licence) and the Vespa. Both from Italy.  Now of course, the market has opened up in India and all the big names have got on board. Honda,Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki. Even BMW opened a manufacturing plant for their "funduro" 650CC bike, but i think they have ceased manufacture now.

I guess I've rambled on for long enough
Catch u guys later

Ivan
So the R65 is going to be a new experience fro me. 4 stroke and all.
