Newbie from the land of OZ

Hi Ladies and Gents,

Newbie to the forum. Haven't been into bikes for more than fifteen years and got the urge again. Picked up my 84 R65 a few weeks ago in Toowoomba Queensland. I was looking around for a couple of months when the bike turned up and was to good a deal to refuse. Conned the father in law to do a road trip and left early Sunday morning, drove all day, loaded the ute that evening, stayed overnight at a relo's place, came back the next day and unloaded in the dark! (1800 kilometre round trip) . The weather was on our side thankfully.

Rode the bike around the block a couple of times and then stripped it down to check it out. Been restoring 1967 mustangs for a hobby for the last ten years and the bmw is a welcome change.
The bike has done 93k and has some oil leaks from the pushrod seals and the rear main. Going right through it, all the oils, new tyres, repainting parts etc. Should have it back on the road in a few weeks.

Enjoy going thru your new R65. A few special tools req'd but many can be fabbed as DIY bits. We love pics of member bikes... and those Mustangs.

Yes they do Monte. A rare car with a quality restoration commands good money. There is a very active mustang community in Sydney.

Welcome to the forum Raven, we're a friendly and helpful bunch especially if you run into any snags. The only thing to be aware of is the natives get restless if denied photo's. Enjoy fettling your new R65, tinkering with them is almost as much as riding them, unless it happens to be in the pissing rain at the side of the road, when of course its a pain in the arse...

Here are some pictures of the bike and some parts that I've cleaned up and repainted. My front wheel at some damage, which I had repaired. I tried attach the pictures with no luck.

Another clever way to lift the bike and ease back pain. Might consider adding some anchor points on the wood deck where you can secure the bike with straps. One small earthquake -or brain fart- and over she'll go.

The board is something I made up with castors to move the bike around when working on it. It sits very solid on it and requires a great deal of force to topple over. The hoist is very handy for the cars and now the bike. Pictures of the snow flakes I mentioned before.

Pictures of the snow flakes I mentioned before.

May I ask who did the repair for you please?
I have a damaged front that I am letting a local firm have a crack at in the next weeks or so, but I am not confident.

As I understand it the "correct" way to repair a damaged alloy wheel is to repair it mechanically and then roll it into the final perfect circular shape. I have rung just about every wheel repairer on the Eastern seaboard of Australia and nobody wants to touch motorbike wheels.

The picture on my last post showed the worst hit on the rim. There were another three small hits that showed up on his jig to test for out or round and buckle (pic attached). He mentioned that the cast alloy was difficult to weld due to air pockets and that the worst hit had some hairline cracks, hence the welding. The rim cost $120 to have repaired. I was really happy with the result as once the rim was painted, I could not tell where the repair was.

The repairer are "All Aluminium Welding" unit 4/5 10a Childs road Chipping Norton in Sydney. The guy to speak to is Nick 0400 372 584 he actually does the repairs.
