Gasket Material
« on: June 04, 2014, 11:23:15 AM »
I need to get a replacement gasket / seal or the fuel cap on my Guzzi, I've gone to auto parts stores and no one has gasket material that is fuel resistant .

Searched for universal replacement gaskets, no luck .

Anyone know where I might find some .

What form does the gasket take ?

Difficult to cut a really neat gasket but I can buy sheets of high density cork gasket material from the local  autoparts store.

These guys have a comprehensive parts list for Guzzi including USA models,
http://www.fowlers.co.uk/parts/
I randomly chose a USA model and clicked on fuel tank where it gave a breakdown of all the fittings.
if they have what you want and wont ship to the states let me know I will get the part want and forward it.

It's a flat gasket cut from thin rubber, maybe 1.5-2 mm thick .

I didn't think this would be a problem to find gasket material, but the fuel resistance aspect is the real problem .

I tried regular rubber material, but it goes bad in a about a month or so .

It swells up, gets soft and tears .

I see that RealGaskets.com have rubber fuel tank gaskets for Suzuki and some other bikes, but not M-G (though they do sell gaskets for the sumps and valve covers on various Guzzis).   Maybe that might work?  Or maybe you might find a cookie sheet of silicone for baking that might work (usually the fuel/oil resistant rubber is nitrile rubber, but maybe the high temp silicone would also resist solvents?)

I got a gasket material multi-pack from Auto Zone, but I had to ask for it at the counter.  They had it in the back with some of the other bulk stuff.

You could also try amazon.

Have you checked McMaster-Carr? They've got all kids of stuff. Ships really fast, too.
