What have I done!
« on: March 07, 2014, 07:36:19 PM »
Several weeks ago I was stopped waiting for traffic so I could make a left turn when a young girl, busy texting, hit me from behind at 40mph. No injuries but the insurance declared the my car a total loss.

paid a reasonable amount but not wanting to get into another car payment I decided to take my GMC pickup back from my 16 year old son and find him a small car. Most of the small cars I found were junk but through the old friend of a friend of a friend I found him a gem. The problem is now I want to keep it for myself.

I've heard this often over the last few years, that a decent used small car was almost impossible  to find and the ones you could find were in excess of 200-300,000 miles, hardly a deal .

I can't leave my '91 Honda CRX Si in the driveway on my days off, without someone ringing my door bell and inquiring if I was interested in selling it .

It doesn't have a V8 in it , does it?  (Don't see the "5.0" badge on the side)

If so - definitely keep it for yourself!

Keep your lad in the Jimmy. He'll be safer should another texting idiot pop him.

Fox-bodied 'stangs with V8s are very popular among the young, Mullet-haired, twerps 'round these parts. Here's a pretty hysterical list of Ten White Trash Cars to Match Your Mullet. Good fun for a Saturday morning. Keep your eyes peeled next trip to WallyWorld.  ;D

I may be old but I'm not senile. Put a V8 in the hands of a 16 year old? Not a chance! This is the 4 cylinder, automatic version of a 'stang. Makes nice noises but has a hard time getting out of its own way.

It was just too good of a deal to pass up. 1993 4 cylinder automatic with 95k miles. Second owner (he bought it from his uncle who was the original owner). The seller bought it intending to drop a V8 in it but time and family took control of the finances. New top, tires, exhaust, radiator, water pump, timing belt and box with a new oem carpet and door panels. All for under $2500

Marc,

Four-cylinders rock, especially at the gas pump. Keep the Fox for yourownself.

I've owned my 1986 VW Cabriolet since 1999 and I'm just the second owner. S'West Airline pilot bought it new in Dallas. 200K+ on the clock. OK, it's got maybe 90 little ponies on a good day but that's cool.

Great car with the top down. Some peeps call 'em a chick car and it must be true 'cause I still get a lotta waves from chicks. Pretty Wife hates riding in the trunk.  8-)

BTW, I've also got a 1995 Ford F150 I bought new. Both the Cabriolet and the 150 are 5-speeds so the Chief-of-the-House doesn't touch 'em. Winner winner. Chicken dinner.

Monte,

I had the hard top version and the diesel pickup version of that particular VW. I actually drove the Rabbit diesel pickup from West Palm Beach, FL to Anchorage, AK and back twice, sleeping in the bed under a fiberglass topper. Oh the things you do when you are young, foolish and trying to live on a military paycheck. I wish I still had either one of them. I was actually going to look at a Cabrio when I found the Mustang. The Cabrio owner was out of town and I got a call about a friend of a friend...

P.S. The GMC Sonoma is a four-cyclinder also.

I wanted a shoebox s10/sonoma with the Iron Duke and a stick shift for quite a while.  Not the most spirited engine out there, but the Iron Duke is absolutely bulletproof.

How bulletproof?  It's what they put in the Grumman LLV (long life vehicle) that drives the mail around your town.

If it were me I'd keep the Sonoma and drive it as often as I could.  If you can eventually get the engine to die, it's none to complicated to replace with a Chevy small block 350  :D

Thanks for sharing the top 10 Monte...
My grandfather was a small farmer for all of his life.  Getting up in his years, he acquired a El Camino for the lower bed.  I was riding with him and noticed a switch below the dash…
"What's that for grandpa?"
"I think it used to activate some type of speakers in the back."

I can only imagine the bass….

Last night I loaned a friend my 2001 Chevy 1 ton for a day with his girl and her kids. On their way home they were rear ended on the freeway. The truck was almost at a stop in heavy traffic when they were rear ended by a person moving at an est. 80 mph. My truck is toast, so was the guy in front of them from the impact. The hitter, and person they were smashed into were totaled to the point of going home on a hook. The Mighty Chevy rolled home under her own steam. Eveyone, all 6 people, are a bit sore, but OK. I will be replacing her with another long bed crew cab. In my opinion, worth the extra gas and ins money.

You are right, I am wrong. I plead the fifth (scotch). That is what I was into when I started this. Hit the wrong category and never looked back. My apologies.
