99 problems and my r65 is one
« on: July 03, 2012, 11:01:02 AM »
hey guys,

i picked up a 1980 R65 a couple of months ago and am in the process of getting it road ready.

It ran for for like 1 minute when i bought it.

took it home and did the following

Cleaned/rebuilt the carbs about $89 in parts
new battery
new spark plugs
changed oil/ filter, It has amsoil synthetic 20/50 in it now
new points
new condenser
replaced headlight switch

still to go:
new headlight mount
also new turn signals in the front
then have to get the bike to run, so far ive been having float problems

strange thing is i changed out the points and condenser yesterday and the bike ran for about 5 mins, but then bowls ran dry, plus i had to get to work.

so the next day i go straight for the bowls and give a little more float, and the bike won't start at all...ugh this bike kills

im ordering some parts from Dime City Cycles for the mount and turn signals

question: is our turn signals stock single or double filament?

You say the float bowls went dry .

Don't know how well versed you are with BMW airhead bikes, but you have to manually move the fuel tap lever, into the 6 o'clock position to get fuel to flow, there isn't a vacuum valve to do this, like a majority of bikes have .

The lever is in 'Reserve', if it is in the 12 o'clock position, and at either the 3 or 9 o'clock position, the fuel is shut off .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Welcome to our happy asylum, Session101. You didn't happen to get out to Miller Motorsports Park for the recent races; the track being pretty much in your backyard.

Confirm fuel flow to the carbs by detaching the fuel line at the carb, then turn the petcock to point straight down. That's the On (auf) position. Horizontal is Off (zu) and straight up is Reserve.

If you've got flow to both carbs, you're good. Avoid doing too much tweaking to the float tabs, They are usually spot on when new. With the fuel tap on and float bowl off, gently lift the float to confirm full fuel shut off.

Are you using the enrichener lever with a cold start? Do not twist the throttle grip until the engine catches; otherwise... no start.

Single filament.

Bonneville Vintage GP

i hope this is what you're talking about and if i can get the BMW up and running ill go, i really want to

but i forgot to mention, that I had the fuel tank derusted and sealed, new fuel lines put in. so the fuel system is all brand new, petcock was also cleaned and rebuilt. yes fuel does goto the carbs and now the float bowls fill. I tried to adjust them on the bike but i might have to pull them off to get the float to sit level.

if its single filament, does that mean i don't have running side markers with the bike on? only used for turn signals?
