On Any Sunday - memories
« on: February 04, 2012, 02:15:12 PM »
Watching the movie on a rainy afternoon with my 7 and 10 yr old sons.  I have not seen this movie since high school.  Watching with my sons reminds me of watching the movie with my father when I was around their age, adding to life long obsession.  I forgot about some of the funny moments in the movie.  They are cracking up.

It is nice to catch up with some of my old heroes.

Living in the midwest now puts me a lot closer to some of the historic venues (I grew up in Maine, from Mass originally).  I may try to take in some flat track racing this summer with the boys.

The old MC club shirts in the movie remind me of growing up around the old bike races and rallies.   My Grandfather started the Capeway Rovers MC club in Mass, and used to announce the races at the Middleborough race track.

Cheers.

On Any Sunday was a huge influence on me, I was 16 when I saw it,and was totally blown away by the flattracking. We didn't have that here, only speedway - but we did have a lot of gravel roads. I spent years riding crazy fast on gravel roads and getting sideways. Flattrack finally did start here, and went for about 15 years, and I had a short play at it...but just on short tracks. Riding dirttrack has influenced my riding style and how I like a bike set up. Yes, definitely an important film for me.

I remember seeing this movie at the Skyline Drive In at Port Moresby, PNG in about 1972.  A big influence on me as that is where I had my first motorcycle, a Suzuki TC100.

The Drive In was located at the end of a WW2 airstrip, where they flew B-17s in the early days and then mainly C-47s.

Ah, yes.  The memories of childhood.  Later I had another Suzuki and then my R65, the first of three Be Ems.

The video copy is floating around somwhere but I have the DVD version now.  Maybe that is why I am Steve McQueen fan.

Cheers, Burt.

Back in the mid 60's I worked at Honda of Boston. I have very fond memories of heading down to Middleborough  on my CL77 with a bunch of other HOB's to camp out and attend the Scramble Races. What fun!  As I recall most of the bikes were British singles and the ground shook as they roared by. Those guys were just amazing to watch. The race weekends were very well organized with a large camping area. One time the power at the track was out but we had brought down a new little Honda Generator to try out. It was able to power the P A system for the announcer (Your Grandfather?). I remember going to the movies to watch On Any Sunday and Just loving it, and Steve McQueen was a hero to me as well ::) Thanks for the memories and sharing your grandfathers legacy with us. D2

Great movie.  I recall seeing it on the big screen when it opened.  Rode my Montesa King Scorpion to the theater with my bride on the back.  The bike died on the way back home.  The only time that bike quit on me.
