R65 LS 1983

Hello!  I have a 1983 R65 LS and can't figure out how to remove the gas tank.  There is a vibration between the seat and tank and I need to remove the tank to fix it.  It's not obvious how this tank comes off.  Help!  Anyone???

Pretty simple, open the seat, remove the tool tray, there is a metal ring that goes over the end of the back bone tube of the frame, pull the ring towards you .

Make sure you have the fuel line disconnected .

Grab the fuel tank and start pulling it back while moving it up and down a bit, the tank fits into a rubber mount at the front, it may be hung up on this .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Plus, there should / may be a fuel tank overflow drain tube affixed to a small pipe on the bottom of the petcock side of the tank. left attached, it might pull the tank from your hands at an inopportune moment.

And welcome to the herd.

And it is much easier if not quite full, and make sure you have a spot ready to set it down and allowing for the end of the petcock to hang over.

There are supposed to be 3 rubber bumpers.  The front one is typically not a problem.
The two in the rear are glued on to the tank, and the glue sometimes lets go and if a previous owner removed the tank one or both might have fallen off and they didn't notice.

They are right & left justified, and there is a thick end and a thin end.
The thick end goes against the bottom of the tank (supporting the weight) and the thin goes against the side.

Parts 2, 3 and 4.

13 is the bail that holds the tank in place.
