Safety Gear (gloves)

Rob, on the subject of gloves, I wear Olympia 305 gloves. They're all black leather (nothing flashy!), but have integrated kevlar protection UNDER the leather. Super comfortable. I love them.

Thanks Ben.  Yes - I love low-flash!

I really want something crush- proof resistant, though.  (No such thing as crush-proof, I'm sure!)
I'm not so concerned with abrasion resistance.  I trust leather in that regard.

Good price, though!  Much better than the Deersports* I paid over $100 for, and didn't even get 500 miles on, before the incident!

*They didn't fit real well, either.  The fingers were too long, and I don't have short fingers!

I have the exact same model.  I saw them on the Olympia website; had never seen them in a store.  And they fit me better than most gloves do.  Like Rob, I find a lot of gloves have long, skinny fingers on them.

I'm not sure what you mean by crush resistant.  These gloves have a knuckle guard underneath the leather.

Due to my lack of attention, I never saw the Jesse-type saddlebag coming toward me at 30 mph, so I never had a chance to remove my hand from the grip.

A hard lesson learned.

Rob, just keep in mind, anything strong enough to stop crushing might have the unwanted effect of being able to shear a finger off in an accident.

However what about something like http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/1/37/16451/ITEM/Fieldsheer-Bullet-II-Gloves.aspx

good point there, John.  I was thinking I could have trolle make me some!

But between the two suggestions, I think I like Ben's Olympia 305's better.
It looks like they have the same armor protection as the Fieldsheer Bullet II's, but more subtle.

And I still think the best way to prevent crushed fingers is to "keep your eyes on the road, your hands upon the wheel handlebars"...

We all want to make it to the roadhouse to have a good time!

(apologies to The Doors :) )

Ah, yes, I see what you mean!  Ouch!

I did the exact same thing, but fortunately at a much lower speed.  I was in a group of 4 guys, touring in Idaho.  We had a reservation at a motel, but we needed to find dinner in the last little town before we got to the motel.  So, we're poking along the main street, looking for a restaurant... and when I look ahead of me, the first rider had stopped for a dog in the street.  I was only going a couple mph, but I was too close to stop.  Fortunately, it only ruined the front fender of my R1150RS and nothing else was hurt.

I was the 2nd rider of 4, with the last 2 about 1/2 mile behind us.  I had only met these ABC riders for the first time, that day.
We were returning from our "Dam Ride", and came into the small town where we were staying.
I thought we had another block to go before the right-hand turn.

We didn't.

The object of my attention:

(the store wasn't even open for business!  :( )

No more group rides for me, especially with people I don't know well.

Whatever hand protection you choose, just make sure you wear it!!!
Summer over here can be warm, (Pretty close to 110 degrees yesterday and today) and riding gear can be a little uncomfortable, but way less uncomfortable than having gravel scubbed out of your wounds........  :o
I saw at least a dozen bikes on the road yesterday and not one had gloves on!  ::)

May  I reccommend Alpinestars for great protection without interefering with dexterity. I've been using SP1 for summer and Stormrider Gortex in winter for about three years now. I'm very happy and confident in them. Plus, they're way more comfortable than any other gloves I've tried.
