Years ago (1971-74) I owned an R60/5, it also lost all the oil in the shaft drive but that went into the rear drive which overflowed and tipped oil on to the rear tyre when parked. It was not a seal problem but it seems something much more difficult to fix. A design problem. I just gave up worrying and simply put a little oil in the shaft from time to time. It didn't cause any more problems.

With oil transfer problems from the shaft to final drive, the seal on the input shaft can still be doing it's job, but oil can get around the threads on the input shaft .

The BMW shop manual has a caution about this, if sealant is not put on the input shaft  threads during reassembly, oil transfer can occur .

I had the R60/5 from new, so maybe lack of sealant was just one of its many assembly defects. Some were a good deal worse. One almost killed me -- one wheel spoke had not been ground down into the wheel and was busy chewing its way through the inner tube. Discovered only by chance (premature tyre replacement due to bad handling, not cured anyway). I was not a happy bunny.
