When I was in field service the office I worked out of had a "cheapie" hand-held unit and I seem to remember it was around $2k, but that was a long time ago.  I really don't know how useful one would be on a wiring harness with max lengths as short as ours...  I think the way they work is to send out an RF pulse and time how long it takes to get a reflection and how the reflection was modified.

Go to Eastwoodco.com they have 2 items one is call fault finder and the other is Short Circuit Tester. I have seen the fault finder work.

Hi John,
I have had the ignition switch fail.  See if you can reach the bottom of it. Have it turned on, then apply pressure to the base where the wires connect (maybe get a wooden dowel in there (not anything metal)) See if lights come on once you are applying pressure.

In my case, once I ascertained it was the switch I removed it and tightened up the base to the key part. Amazing those zip ties have lasted the last 8 years.  ;)

a TDR [time domain reflexometer] is meant for telephony / data type twisted pair or coaxial wiring. Its operation depends on circuit capacitance, wire gauge as a function of resistance and some other special voo-doo like cable core insulation, line impeadance and sheathing. I would be great if they worked on cycle / automotive wiring but alas... The best bet is still a working knowledge of the use of a volt / ohm meter and knowing how to read a wiring schematic. Besides there really is no such thing as electricty. Its all done with magic smoke. Ever work on somthin' 'lectric and have smoke come out of it? It stoped workin' didn't it!
