New owner from Australia

Hi. This is my first BMW and first road bike in many years. Its a 65ls 1983 mod. All I have ridden in the past are Japanese road and road/trail bikes large and small.
Truthfully if it wasn't for the series "A Longway Round" I may of never considered a BMW but that bit the riding bug in me again and after searching the net and reading about BMW's in general and these bikes (the r65) specifically that was it, time to buy one.
Hope these bikes are as half as good as Ive been reading and Ill be one happy camper. It is only a few more years till the family grows up then I intend to tour on this 2up
Out here there are 100kms of sealed road, very little traffic, plenty to see if you don't mind taking a detour down unsealed roads, with the only thing to worry about is hitting a kangaroo.
Cheers Ernie.

Ernie, welcome aboard, and welcome back to motorcycle riding. I don't think you will be disappointed in your R65LS, it's an all around competent machine, and quite user friendly to work on. Where about in Australia do you reside in ? We have a few members here from Australia, I'm sure they will post here in a few days.

Riding all year long since 1993 .
I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Ernie, welcome to the asylum...  Your R65 should serve you well as long as you remember it would qualify for antique plates in another year where I live...  ;)

Do a good maintenance on it so you have a maintenance baseline, service accordingly, and you should get along just fine.  As far as doing a lot of two-up touring I suppose it would do fine unless both of you are "full-sized". ;D

Have fun...

Howdy, Ernie!  Always good to see another bloke from Down Under registering here on our little forum of fun!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Post a pic of your LS when you have a chance to, OK?  That bike is (IMHO) possibly the most beautifully designed bike BMW ever produced (along with the R100RS)!  I'm sure you'll get lots of compliments on it!

We all look forward to reading about your blossoming love affair with your Beemer!

Hi Ern, I'm on the other side of Oz to you, welcome to the site.
Parts can be a PITA to source S/H out here compared to the States and Europe, but most are still available new aftermarket and OEM. Surprisingly they are probably cheaper and more readily available than parts for lots of Jap bikes (know from experience).
I work part time for one supplier, Munich Motorcycles, and though it seems I'm drumming up business (I'm not really), they can post out most parts to anywhere in Oz, taking the pain out of trying to find a local supplier of new bits. Discount Motorcycle Wreckers in North Coburg Vic. is also a well known source of S/H Beemer parts.
Hope you have a great time with the LS, they are a very collectable machine.

Bill.................;-)
