If you've ever ridden a 900 with solid shaft, you wouldn't be asking the question!! LOL
It smoothes out gear changes, clutch engagements, and if changing down suddenly on a trailing throttle with the larger machines, stops the dreaded momentary back wheel lockup. The 65's have always had them, I fitted one to my 90/6 (they retro fit with no problems), and from about '80 all the Airheads got them.
Some racer types though prefer the solid shafts for weight saving and less complexity, hence reliability, reasons.
