my thought on the difference between the bikes
« Reply #16 on: January 16, 2007, 02:23:17 PM »
I think the major difference in the bikes was that the 79-80 models have 45 horse power...emission controls were added in 1980 and cut into the power a bit. Thus in 1981 the hp was jumped to 50 to compensate for the change. So the 81 up bikes have a little bit more zoom, at least over the 1980 and possibly the 1979.

I just wish I had thought initially to encourage those who voted to also post a reply in the thread.  It would have been interesting to know who voted and what they ride.
Well , I voted, I have an '81 R65, serial number : WBM036405B6385009,  azure blue (paint code 158) I am the original owner, bike was purchased from Abt BMW in Chicago , January 1981. Price was $3295 US, plus all of the add on charges came to a grand total of $3641.38 US. Some of the best money I ever spent on a vehicle. I just turned over 78,000 miles (126,000 km.) about 3 weeks ago. We need to get everybody here at R65.org, to make an entry on the R65 Registry, and mention also, that this site exists. May help to increase  the membership here, and you can never have too many R65 enthusiasts, helping each other out with their bikes issues.

Hey Steve,

The blue color on your bike in the photo is very close to BMW's Azure Blue
(name translated and sold as Niger Blue in some countries).
It's close enough that most folks probably wouldn't notice the
difference if it had the pinstripe on it.
BMW paint code is 158.
BMW color code is 501.

It was used extensively on the '83 & '84 R65's.

Hi Eddie,

Yeah, technically it's pretty much a match for BMW's azure blue, but Justin painted the tank so I'm giving him the credit. ;)
According to him, "Steve, it's actually DuPont Hot Hues #741901 - Blue Mood... "
I just think of it as good ol' Beemer Blue myself...

i understand why the difference from the ls models, why the difference in the 78-80 model and the 81-84 model? i thought they where the same till the 84 model and that is when they switched to the r80 frame? someone please enlighten me on the difference in years.

Can you say "Clutch".  I new you could... ;)  Cast iron vs. Nikasil cylinders.  Square air box  vs round(1979 only).  Leaner jetting with dome top carbs on the 81+ vs flat tops on the 1979 and 80s.  ATE brakes vs Brembos.  LWB frame, k75 front end, mono shock, "y"wheels 1985 and up.  Nickle plated input splines?  Let me count the ways...
