What do you think of this idle on my 1982 R65?

I haven't developed an ear for what I think a good idle is. I'm playing by intuition and RPMs. This is after the bike has been warmed up. Do you guys hear that clunking sound?

Also for static timing, the '-S' is not dead center in the window - it's a little bit higher. Does this mean my firing is potentially delayed?

Thoughts?

Otherwise, the bike runs great! After working on it for 3 months and finally getting to ride it, I was smiling ear to ear in my new helmet.

If the S mark is high in the window then the ignition is slightly advanced but two things to consider before worrying about it:

The timing marks should align with a factory applied notch in the side of the window which may not neccessarily be in the centre. Mine is below centre, others could be above centre.

It's more important that you set the timing accurately at full advance which may mean the static timing at idle does not line up but it's of no consequence. Set it correct at full advance and let the S mark fall where it will.

Sound wise it's hard to tell. Does it get quieter when the clutch lever is pulled in.

Can you isolate the noise ??
Engine top end, transmission .
When you had the rocker covers off, did you happen to notice if any of the rocker arms had a greenish plastic insert at one end ?
Replacement rocker arms usually have this, I got one in 1983 when a needle bearing failed in one of the rocker arms you have to shim the rocker arm to get the correct end clearance, I had a 2-3 mm end gap with the new rocker arm and the side support .
