Motogadget speedo installation help?
« on: November 29, 2016, 09:31:53 PM »
Hi Guys

After a period of inactivity I am back updating my bike.

After some extensive riding over the Melb cup long weekend my speedo self destructed. Given I am doing a bit of a café racer conversion I decided to go for a Motogadget replacement unit.

I'm part way through installation and I have a couple of questions which I'd appreciate some guidance on......

1) Which wire to I connect the tacho to? Looking at the schem the black wire goes to the ignition coil and I suspect this is the one. However there is also a Green/blue wire which also goes to the coil. The motogadget manual says to connect to a switched ground of ignition unit? Any thought?

2) Does anyone know if the acewell speedo sensor works with the motogadget gauge?
The S11 sensor is a hall sensor I believe and I suspect the motogadget is asking for a reed switch which is able to "output a ground signal".

3) The charging light?
I vaguely remember reading this is necessary for the bike to work? Is that right? If so then do I need to keep a bulb in that circuit or can I override it with a resistor of the right load?

A pic of my bikes progress is below.

When I had to replace my speedo I searched all I could and I remember seeing a lot of questions on using the Acewell speedo sensor with a Motogadgets unit. No one seemed to be able to get them to work together so I chose to get an Acewell and have been very happy with it.

Also, the charging light is required for the charging circuit to "activate". Without it you will just drain your battery. A resistor can be installed and there is a nice write-up by Montmil in the R65 FAQ section, although I can't just scroll back to find it anymore. If you do a search of just the FAQ section and use the words "charging " and "resistor" and search all time frame, it pops right up. I have had it installed on my R65 for a couple of years now with no problems and just use a small led for a visual indicator (the led does not have enough resistance in the circuit to allow it to energize.)
Keep your bike in good repair: motorcycle boots are not comfortable for walking.

Thanks for the tip on the charging light. Will check it out.
