R65LS Twin ATE Brake Rebuild -- Some Questions

Greetings from a cold & wet Durban Spring Day!

I am the proud owner of a R65LS 1982 c/w Vetter Half-Fairing & Twin ATE Brakes.

After more than 25 years, and decidedly spongy brakes, I thought it was time to overhaul my front brake system. Having had s/s brake lines  made up as well as s/s pistons, I am in the process of putting it all back again. Forgive me, but my memory is not too good, and I should have taken digital photos (my normal practice) while stripping the brakes. Hence I am a little stuck with the following:

1. Right-hand ATE Caliper.

1.1. Do the two bush-spacers go between the caliper and the fork leg?
1.2. Do the two wave-washers fit between the bolt head & the caliper?

2. My brake line splitter bolts directly onto an aluminum 'L' bracket which in turn bolts to a brace piece  ahead of the Speedo/Rev Counter Unit.

2.1. Does the splitter bolt in front or behind the aluminum 'L' bracket?
2.2. Does the brake line from the bar-mounted master cylinder exit from the left or right hand side of the splitter?

Trusting someone with an twin ATE setup can assist.

The spacers go into the holes on the caliper, and the flanged part goes between the caliper and the fork leg. The wave washers go under the bolt head. As far as your splitter, my '81 has dual discs, but is mounted differently than an LS, so I can't help you out there.

I'm going through some of the same issues with the splitter on my '79 but it sounds like the setup on your bike is different than mine.  The on mine splitter attaches to the metal bracket that attaches to the forks and on which the instrument pod sits.  I can't figure out where the splitter attaches   IE: the front or back of this metal bracket.

I can't find pictures or a diagram anywhere.  If someone knows (or better still) has some pictures of this setup I sure would like to know.  I'll figure it out eventually but it sure is a pain in the butt.

Crossrodes, this gizmo attaches directly to he back of the instrument/headlight/turn signal bracket on my '82 LS as well, I have no aluminum bracket.  Perhaps a pic may provide a better idea of what Mr. DeanRider is wondering about...  The only kind of bracket I can think of is on our '80 R65 (non-LS) where the junction block with the switch is attached to - there is nothing like this on an LS or later R65s.

Bob, what you are describing sounds a little like the "top hat" used on the wheel bearing assembly.  Different size, of course.

Bob Grauer replied on Boxerworks:
"Rob, when I installed a set of these [rotors] on my '93 R100RT some time ago I had a similar problem. What I found was that I needed to shim the caliper (2 piston Brembo) so that the rotor was perfectly centered. Thereafter the rotor made minimal noise."

But if you put the "top hat" spacers inside the hole on the caliper, that would probably make the hole too small for the stock screw to fit.
I guess I will find some thin shim stock and make my own.

Txs everyone for your assistance and wisdom! I have placed the shim/bushes as suggested between the fork leg and the right-hand caliper. They seem to be centred okay. I have had to return the brake lines as they were some 30mm short. I will only get them back in a few days. In the meantime, when the rain stops (we are having seasonal, yet heavy rains and storms across KwaZulu-Natal/Free State/Gauteng and Eastern Cape Provinces here in South Africa), I will get my digital camera out and take a picture of the brake union/bracket assembly. Question: Do I use Photobucket to host the pictures or can they be uploaded directly to this site?

You can post ONE photo per posting.  This keeps our server space manageable.

The best way is to use something like Photobucket.

It is also good to check the size of the picture so it isn't too big.
