R65 LS and Krauser mounts
« on: October 28, 2014, 11:53:50 PM »
I just picked up a set of Krauser luggage mounts for my '83 R65LS; they don't seem to fit.  Was R65LS quite different that the regular R65 in terms of a luggage system?

With the top hole of the rack mounted to the bolt side of the rear shock, and the lower bolt mounted through the passenger foot peg, the upper back mount point doesn't line up with what I assume is the obvious mounting point on the frame.  In addition, the seat hinge binds with the top tube on the rack.  Please see attached photo.  This can't be right.

If I remove the lower foot peg bolts and align the upper back points with the frame mount point, the lower foot peg mounting holes are off quite a bit.  (photo attached) In addition, the shocks will rub on the lower tube.  I'm not sure this is right either.

Thoughts?

As far as I know there is no difference between the LS subframe and the standard R65. in fact I am sure of it as a friend of mine years back acquired a very, very rough LS and put it back together as a standard R65, I remember him buying pannier frames from a "Std' R65 owner and they fitted perfectly.

I suspect that you may have gone awry with the bolting of the mount at the top of the shock.

Here is a photo of my little rebuild project - as you can see, the top of the frames are on the nut side of the frame.

Here is a photo I took in the daylight of how I mounted the luggage mount to the top of the shock.  The only thing I can think of is I perhaps should have used a new bolt to mount the frame on the outside of the existing shock bolt.  As you can see from the photo, I've mounted the frame under the existing bolt.

Also, I've attached some photos of the lower bar on the luggage mount rubbing on the shock.

Thinking about this now, I put Progressive shocks on last year, but I don't recall them being bigger than the stock units.

I have a set of the frames on my LS I saw the machine they came from it was a standard 65 three years older than mine. They fitted perfectly. remember the top damper mounts the frames must fit behind the dampers that is inboard. every thing will then line up. If you have the rack as well to allow the seat to tip you will need two 1/4 inch strips a top the frames to allow the rack to move rearward the required amount. I cannot at this time remember the dimensions You will need.

Update!

I had to use most of my weight, a small wall and some foul language to bend and stretch the luggage racks to the factory holes on the bike.  I'm worn out, beer time...

I see you are already fully across the three essential elements of motorcycle spannering.

A fully qualified BMW airhead mechanic no less! Congratulations.

I wonder why, assuming you had to bend both racks a similar amount, my the previous owner found it necessary to bend them in the first place?

Over time I have swapped lots of racks between different BMWs and I don't recall ever using more than a light smattering of element 3 in the process.
