Engine work ahead, oh joy!!
« on: October 04, 2014, 11:03:30 PM »
Finally done with the resurrection of someone else's R90/6, and I'm waiting on parts for the 650GS and the R850.  Sooooo. Lets play with the new leak down tester.  I was suspecting that the left side of the R45 needed new rings and the test did not disappoint.

Left side showed a 45% loss through the crankcase and the right side showed a 15% loss through the intake valve.  The result on the right side kind of surprised me.  I wasn't expecting that.  ~sigh~

Well, since I'm pretty sure I'm keeping this thing until the end of time, I might as well do everything. Valves & rings on both sides.  Going to take the heads/cylinders/pistons off tomorrow and make an appointment with my airplane mechanic to take measurements and dispense advice (since he rides as well).

Looks like Max BMW has R45 engine parts.... yay!!

Motobins also have rings and valves for R45's although they are both double the price of R65 items.

I wonder if the left side problem is sticky rings. How many miles has that engine done ?

Engine has somewhere around 39,000 km's on it.   I knew Moto Bins would have the parts...shipping to the states is kinda spendy though.

Dee, shipping shouldn't be too bad unless you get something heavy.
