Timing Chain Cover

OK guys what am I missing? I want to get the timing chain cover off, I followed (I think) all of the steps in the Clymer manual, and the cover will not come out. The cover came loose and I can flop it around pretty good but there is not enough clearance to get it out of the way to inspect the chain. The problem seems to be the very bottom bolts. I got the right side out of the way by threading it past the crossover but the right side will not clear. i am going to order the wrench for the exhaust nuts but I was hoping to hold off on that for a while.

The crank bearing is a light interference fit in the cover. Does the cover "spin" on the crank bearing? If so, that's the issue. Mine came off without any heat, but the clymer manual suggests heating the area around the crank bearing for reassembly. You could try a heat gun on that area.

Better beg, borrow or buy that exhaust nut tool -often referred to as a Fugawi War Club- right away. That x-over exhaust pipe will prevent you from removing the timing chest cover.

I have a photo-essay on timing chain replacement in the forum's Photo Gallery that may be of some help to you. Pay very close attention to the need for the chain's sprockets to be positioned and aligned prior to removing the chain. Could possibly save you a day's worth of fussin' n' cussin'.

Ok thanks. The cover came off of the bearing ok it is just that cross over pipe. I will try to order the exhaust nut wrench right away.
