Gauge Mounting
« on: July 06, 2013, 09:15:57 PM »
Hi all, I have a 1987 r65 that I wanted to mount a voltmeter and a clock to. Does anybody make a handlebar mount for 2 1/16 gauges? Any other mounting places?  Thanks

Hey there, Pacman. If you still have the OEM instrument cluster/dashboard on your mono-shocker, you may have to get "crafty" to design and fab a mount for those fairly large sized gauges. Placing the two desired "steam gauges" up in the handlebar area will make for a crowded space. Ever consider digitals? Could be a little easier but not by much. Luck to you.

BMW OEM. Those gauges were offered on the later monoshock R80s, saw them in the factory literature. Look on Max's BMW website for the part #s. Use the fork top ears from BMW and the VDO gauge cups.

I had the same problem on my 1982 R65. I simply made my own
clamp out of aluminum and bolts. Requires some bending of the aluminum and drilling for attachment bolts. Good Luck.

Digital? I like the way that sounds. Just want to keep an eye on what's going on with the bike. Has anyone added aftermarket gauges without it looking like a hack job?

Motobins has them.
A couple of metal ears which use the headlight support bolt as fixation and have the correct angle and holes for the Motometer pods.
These pods can hols a standard 52 mm dia gauge. Be it a clock, voltmeter or oil pressure....

Would the R90S2 (about 2/3's the way down the page) work?  Airtech has assured me that it'll fit the R65 (I hope they're right, since I gave them a bundle of cash a few weeks back).

Do you have a fairing on your R65?

Last summer, I tweaked, reworked, painted and mounted an Airtech R90ST fairing on Bengt Phorqs R90. Also reworked and fitted the after-market wind screen, which Airtech does not offer.

Point being, the R90S2 panel you ordered is designed to mount to the R90 or R90S7 fairing, not to the handlebars. Is this in your plans? :-?

Supposedly, Airtech is making the fairing (there's about a 3 week delay).  And they'll be sending the windscreen and the dash also.  They assured me that it'll all fit the R65.  So it all goes together and mounts to the headlight bolts (I think).

Actually I already have a fairing on the bike. It's a pichler uni-4 that I really didn't want to cut up. Just looking for a way to mount some gauges( digital or analog) without it looking to tacky.

Well, I thought I was the only one around with a Pichler.  How old is yours? Did you do the initial install yourself?  Let's see some pictures!

Really not sure how old it is, came with the bike. It makes a big hole in the wind going down the road. I love it.

Speakers, cool!  I have (had) the EXS P-3.  Much rougher shape than yours now... one day I'm going to contact them and see if I can get a new one.

the guys on the Vulcan forum used to swear by these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/KURYAKYN-BLACK-LED-BATTERY-VOLT-METER-GAUGE-HARLEY-HONDA-YAMAHA-SUZUKI-KAWASAKI-/181165742144?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a2e51d840&vxp=mtr

Can be had for about $40, small, and tells ya what you need to know.  This looks like a back-mount style.  I think they used to make a bottom-mount that the Vulcan guys would stick to the top center of the ignition shroud area with double sided foam tape.  Didn't look as cheasy as it might sound.
