torn carb diaphram

i was out running and bam! the right side goes stupid on me. it running but its not. i was real close to home so i gimp it home. i had this happen once before on another bike so i had an idea. pulled the cap and there it was a big ol tear in the right carb diaphram. i start calling around and just end up calling the Bing Carb guys cuz like Rob already told me they are the only guys that have the little plastic ring thing and the proper diaphram. ordered them up and they got here yesterday.

going to see how hard it is to removed the ring and torn diaphram and install the new parts. should be bad by see how everything looks like it goes. any hints? or is it that easy?

i used some shoe goo rubber glue in the mean time to repair the tear, it would last a while but if i can get new parts i like doing that.

I found that the old ring can be dislodged fairly easily with a thin flat blade screwdriver.  Try it both from the top and under the bottom through the torn diaphragm.

The new ring should be warmed before installing it, to make it somewhat pliable.

The official way to do this, I don't know.  I boiled mine for 5 minutes.  Installation was several weeks apart.  The first one was no problem.  On the second one, a little bit of the 'inside' edge (the small-diameter edge) of the diaphragm kept sneaking out of place during the final 'snap' of the ring...  It took me 3 tries - but I just did a 400 mile round-trip this last weekend, and I totally forgot to worry about it!

The hardest part, I found, was lining up the index tab on the 'inside' edge (very important) and making sure it stayed in place during ring installation.

I would call the guy at Bing for hopefully a real answer on heating them.

well i locked the every bottom edge of the slide in a soft vice just enough to hold it firmly. i then matched up the ring to a bushing/race driver, then with a sharp little blow from a small dead hit hammer it snapped right in. i did try a couple of times just using my fingers but that wasnt gooing to do. i found like you a medium flat screwdriver popped the old one off real easy.
