Acewell install on 83 r65
« on: January 24, 2013, 09:24:23 PM »
Howdy folks, just "finished" my install of a Acewell 2853 gauge on the "Mexico" r65.  I followed the wiring diagrams for the gauge and for the bike very carefully.  I needed a "keyed switch" power and ended using the solid red wire on the accessory block thinking it was keyed power.  Well it ain't.  Can anyone tell me where I can tap into a keyed power source so the gauge isn't on constantly (yeah that's the current issue)?  Thanks for the help.

Hello

Why not go from the back of the headlight.
On mine there's 3 key positions for the lights & sidelights

+ it's easy to find

Hope it helps

Hello !
Maybe you've a free spade near the key swithc which is a switched positive originally used for the voltmeter.
Look at the schematics for your bike.

There is an unused wire in the vicinity of the instruments .

It's green with a black spiral band, it's used for additional indicators, voltmeter or clock .

Zach knew his old man was at a CHL renewal class last evening so I wasn't able to assist via telephone. I've been keeping my shop manuals and tech notes close at hand these days.

Bob, Just confirming for recondo that the green/black would be used only for the clock's instrument bulb.

It's used to power the voltmeter, clock and the internal lighting for both indicators .

Another option, would be to use the green wire with a black spiral band that powers the 'parking' light bulb below the main headlight bulb .

Just an FYI, the "free" spade terminal on the ignition switch that is left open unless you attach the green with black tracer wires that go to the special equipment plug is a constant hot terminal.  The 2 into 1 green with black tracer with the female spade terminal that usually goes into the terminal is what I ended up using.  Only issue is the tach wire may be on the wrong coil post as it's not picking up and rpm's.  Once I run that down it should be perfect.  Thanks for the ideas.

Recondtexas has not yet set up a web-based photo sharing program so his old man is posting his completed Acewell installation photo.

Turned out pretty slick. Check out the OEM ignition switch placement.

From Radio Shack, a small 12v wheat bulb with a red lens has been installed in the steering crown nut serving as the GEN lamp location. Zach also has the solid-state back up circuit fitted.

New headlight brackets and some vintage BMW front turn signals -scored from my Beemer stash- mounted on the headlamp brackets using the stock R65 wiring. Says he has ordered, from Dime City, a Lucas-style tail lamp that will marry up with a soon-to-be modified R65 rear fender sourced via eBay.

Don't mean to steal his thunder but his work is very clean. Props, recondo. ;)

Good looking installation !!!

I've never seen the display working before, does the tachometer and speedometer display both at the same time .

A cost effective way of doing away with the OEM indicators when they need repair .

perhaps Zach will log on soon and answer the questions about the Acewell operations 'cause I sure don't know nuttin' about 'em. I'll bet it does though, much like my Vapor R65 install.
