Front Brake Upgrade
« on: July 23, 2012, 02:53:48 PM »
Hello All,

Should have the frame finished and front/rear wheels back on within the next week.
The discs are shot, being badly scored, so I need to change them, anybody had success or otherwise with the EBC set-up? they are alot cheaper then std that's for sure... :-?

I've got EBC semi floating steel discs on my '81 R65, with EBC graphite pads .

I have not noticed any real improvement in dry braking, but wet braking is greatly increased over the stock OEM rotors and pads .

Living in a desert, I don't have any issues with them rusting after getting wet, but one member here, Semper Gumby has them on his '80 R65, living in the Atlanta metro, area, he experiences a lot more wet weather than I do, has said his rust readily .

Braided stainless lines are a relatively low price upgrade and give a bit more 'feel' over old OEM rubber lines .

Thanks Bob,

I got the braided S/S lines on the shopping list, so the EBC rotors rust?

That's what I read here from one member, that's the only comment I've heard about them rusting .

I think Rob Valdez had one on the front of his '79 R65, maybe if he sees this he can comment on it, as he resides in the Indianapolis area and experiences much more wet weather conditions than I do .

Is the EBC setup the same as what you'd get from Spiegler for a rotor rebuild?  I love mine, but it sounds like you have the dual disc so it would be twice as expensive..

The new rotor is semi floating, I don't notice much difference between the old one myself.  I also have stainless lines on the front and a new master cylinder.  I ended up getting the oem pads when I did the rotor, but I'm going to try the EBC pads when these wear out.

Rust wise, I haven't noticed any, I've had the rotor for about 5 months or so.. but I'm in Texas.  I've ridden in the rain or on a wet road maybe twice this year.

I have an ebc on my R65 cafe racer but have not noticed it rusting.  I have pfm cast iron rotors on my R100 and they rust a lot.  front end of the bike is brown as a result!  Stops well though.

Rev Light (UK)
Steve Hawkins R100 (that wants to be an R65)

Thanks Guys,

The std S/S rotors are really expensive, the EBC are half the price and reports are that they are the same in the dry but better in the wet.

Either way, I'm going for the EBC set up (with the EBC pads too).

I'll post pictures soon!
