I was doing the head removal for the valve seat job, on the 84 r65. I noticed my top ring on the piston was broken.  Should I just pop on a new one?

Probably have to buy the set. Your '84 has nikasil cylinders so there should not be an overbore question.  Check the cylinder bore for any ugly scratches and if it's looking OK, consider yourself golden.

+1 - hope that you don't have scratches in the bore from broken ring.   IF not, then put on a new set - I don't think they come separately either, and don't use a "used" one from another engine.

As far as I can see rings only come as a set although at one time they were available separately.

Just out of interest were there any running symptoms, low compression reading or increased oil consumption caused by the broken ring ?
