Muffler Mounts Stripped?
« on: May 16, 2012, 04:01:18 PM »
I'm sure this has been discussed before.  I've been living with them for decades...

Good ones (left side):

My most recent "fix" (right side):

Not so bad, but it is a pain to get to the top fasteners to keep them from rotating.  I've also used fillister-head bolts.

I have no welding equipment nor skills, or I would weld the bolts in place.
I wonder if JB Weld would work?  Put some under the heads of the bolts and then surround the joint between the bolt head and the stripped out body nut.

What do you think?

Why not just use longer bolts and put nuts on the other side ?

Is there access problems to this area with the muffler installed ?

Or rethread the holes to the next larger size .

Access to the top is VERY tight.  The reason for the fasteners orientation is to allow all of the fiddling with the lock washer and nut to be done from below.

Yes, I will tap it out to the next size available.  (I do have a set of taps!)

I had my muffler mounts strip early in thier life and put lock nuts on the frame side. Its been this almost the 30 years that I have had my R65.

On all airheads, including the larger siblings, it's a good idea to use a longer bolt for one of the two, and add a nut to the other side. This removes the strain from the threads and helps prevent them stripping out.
