1979 R65 Front Shock

I have an oil leak out of the top of my right front shock. I know you can get new seals for them and repair them.  But how hard is it to take them apart and repair them, and do you need any special tools?  I have no problem buying another tool but if it it costs as much as having it rebuilt, then saving me the time to do it might be worth it. But, since I will to pull the fork apart to take the shock in someplace, if it is a matter of a couple of retaining rings, then hey, taking the fork apart is probably half the battle.

If you remove the dust cap on the leaky fork, remove the allenhead bolt and see if there is a metal crush washer under it, that may be the only problem .

There is an o-ring on the cap that has the allen head bolt .

You need to push down on the cap to get to the wire retaining clip .

After the clip is out the cap and the spring will come out, the cap is under tension from the spring so let it out slowly .

You can then replace the o-ring .

No special tools are required if you want to completely disassemble the forks .

I always thought this should be a fibre washer as that's what was fitted to mine when I got it. Bob's right though the parts fiche shows this is a copper crush washer. It's just making an air/oil tight seal though with no mechanical loads involved so fibre washers seem to work just as well.

The first time I replaced the oil in the forks, there was no fiber or metal washer there, just a Loctite thread sealer type material .

I've been using the copper crush washer ever sincve .
