Faulty gaitors

Just put new clutch plate in (1981 R65/ 150k) so thought as well to put on new rubber gaitor . Sent to Motorworks and fitted same.Leaking oil on rear bottom rubber joint,Took of/cleaned /silicon fitted again still leaked .Sent to Sherlocks did same/ fitting same problem....no chance of sealing.so found my old gaitor,different type of rubber,softer more flexible,put on no problem! Were the other gaiters after market rubbish ,they were thick and stiff and no chance of sealing oil in. Anyone else had this problem?

The clamps you have, do they have a short piece of metal between the gap between the 'ears' of the clamps ?

The channel shaped piece of metal is spot welded to one side of the clamp, doesn't take too much to break the weld and lose the part, never will seal right after that .

The rubber boot also has a top/bottom/front/back.  From the Max BMW ,microfiche:04 33 17 1 230 304 RUBBER COVER 0.14  $21.42

"This part is a difficult installation, especially on the paralever bikes, and it is possible to install it upside down and/or backwards. You can use a Sears cotter pin removal tool to install the boot."

,Original gaitor was OK now installed.gaitor clamps OK .It was the thickness/stiffness  of the rubbish after market gaitor that was the problem. Genuine gaitor made of softer more pliable rubber. Where does it say which is top/bottom....back/front on gaitor?

The older OEM gaitors had OBEN molded into the rubber, it goes on top, as far as forward and aft orientation, I'm not sure it matters, the clamps are the same size front and back .

The last gaitor I purchased about 18 months ago, had no letters molded into it .
