Loose sidestand
« on: July 18, 2011, 10:41:29 AM »
Need to tighten the countersunk allen screw on  my sidestand - 82 R65.  Don't have a metric allen that will pass THROUGH the exhaust tube.  (Slight  design mistake by Herr Dieter?)  Special tool needed or is disassembly of the exhaust system requred.  This bike was in storage for a long while and I think got shoved around while on the sidestand (not by me).  Any thoughts?

Not a great design, as you have found out.

Not many options available other than loosening up the exhaust system .

A popular aftermarket side stand, is the Brown side stand, about $130US .

Pull the exhaust to get to the big 'ol screw. Some owners will add a thin washer as a shim to tighten up the action. If yours is bent, suggest a large hammer. :D

I'll give the exhaust   a good soak with MEGABLASTER and go from there.  Mufflers came off easily a while ago, if a good thing can be said obout the new "bleep" gas it doesn't eat up exhausts like the leaded stuff did.

You'll probably need to loosen up the header pipes to gain access to the bolt head .

If the finned exhaust nuts have never been off and had an anti-seize compound applied to the threads, you may be in for a bit more work than you had anticipated .

Hi there everyone. I remember reading about this stand somewhere in the forum and that it is a good replacement for the OEM sidestand. Like most of you I find it difficult to reach while seated. If I remember correctly this stand was able to be fitted easily, was easier to reach from a seated position and didn't lean the bike over at such a sharp angle as the stock version.
I also remember (maybe) someone recommending a way to change the stock unit so that it didn't automatically spring back up when the bike was lifted upright. Is this the same with the Brown stand?
I use only the sidestand as I find that the bike is difficult to lift onto the centre stand with my physical limitations. Hope someone can help thanks..............

Hi Adrian, if your stand has the 2 springs like my '84, the pivot bolt should have an extension on the back that hits a pivoting plate that the springs hook into.
I believe that if you cut the extended 'pin' off the end of the bolt the stand will stay down when you want it to.

I should have done it 25 years ago, it's too late now as I am used to it springing up by itself.

Mr Stig, I made a new bolt and bronze bush for my stand to remove the slack. The factory bolt has the threaded part inside the bush which causes the hole in the bush to wear prematurely (like after 25 years).

I bought a M8 countersunk socket bolt with an unthreaded section and extended the thread just enough so that it wasn't inside the new bronze bush that I turned down to fit exactly.

Hey Bob, I read your sentence referring to the use of anti-seize entirely backwards! I read it as if the use of anti-seize could cause problems; not the other way around. I wonder if 'nor' should have been used rather than 'and'. I took the "and had an anti-seize compound applied to the threads" as a separate thought not thinki g to add the 'never' part! Am I going dyslectic? :o

The reason I panicked was that I just finished taking my exhaust apart, painted it and remounted it and liberally gooped on the anti-seize. :o

Round here, a packrat is someone who never throws anything away, or gives up on an old/worn out item - might have some useful bit on it that comes in handy 4 or 5 years down the road - be a shame to toss it out now!  ;-)

Thanks for the explanation nhmaf. I'm way too minimalist and anal and structured so I tend to throw away stuff that is old and/or useless to me and can't be sold or given away for someone else to use. The idea of Sue's  about keeping the old unit still attached if I do by the Browns is a good idea though.
And would you believe it. Having tried to make you all jealous 'cos I talk about South Australia and 9 months a year of good riding weather and what happens. I finally ready to start spraying the bits and bobs I 've spent weks preparing and now it's gonna rain for a couple of days.  >:( :-/
