81 R65 restoration Project
« on: July 08, 2009, 01:01:35 AM »
Just wanted to show and tell my restoration project. Thanks to those of you that have helped with photos, diagrams, advice and parts. It's coming along nicely - slow but sure. Almost through the electrical and all current tests have turned out positive. This is a great model bike and I hope to enhance the fascination you all share for these machines. My 78 R100/7 is getting quite jeolous sitting in the garage next to the 650.

Let me know if the links get truncated.

Thanks again for all of your help.  I'll be posting updates as they happen.

Boredom has struck.  The project has come to a halt since just before Christmas.  All that is left is receiving the jugs and heads back from Ted, re-assembly of the engine and installation into the frame which is now completed with all the components.  All dressed up and no place to go.  So, at the risk of wearing out my welcome, here's a few more links to the rebuild and restoration.  Can't wait to get on this sweet bike and get some miles under the seat.

Engine Case & Paint:

Clutch:

Rear Main Seal:

Oil Pump:

Top End Job:

More after the much anticipated brown truck arrives.  You gotta love these R65's!

Thanks again for all the help and direction.

That is a beautiful engine, Mike!  I would be afraid to get it dirty.  (And everything I own is dirty...) ;)

Thanks Rob, I'm looking forward to using this bike.  That first mud puddle will be tough.  Kind of like that first hit on the field. I'll take plenty of pictures of it before it hits the road. Can't wait to run the San Diego mountains and canyons on the weekends.

"First hit on the field"?

I'm clueless on that one! :)
